It would be nice if everything in the world didn’t have its own @&$%£¥ charger. I’d rather drink battery acid than it be an act of galactic governmental coercion.

Apple will simply toss in an external adapter module on products sold in Europe. This reminds me of the Mac IIlc, which was screwless, but there was one optional screw hole on the lid because Canada had a rule that stated that electronic devices had to be held together with screws. The Coleco Adam Computer also came with a three-to-two outlet adapter for houses without grounded outlets, but they did not include it in Canada versions because those adapters were (and are) illegal there.

Just make an adapter from one to the other. No need to change the phone.

Why do people who use Apple devices need a charger that works with Android devices?

Why is the EU wiser than Apple and their customers, who actually have skin in the game?

I really like the idea that all the Android manufacturers have accepted the USB-C as the standard.

It’s not asking that much for Apple to adopt what is/has become the industry standard. I’m all for capitalism but proprietary charging cables is just plain greed.

Is using standard USB or DC chargers really that hard?

I love the Lightning connector...so much better than USB-C.

I believe that the iPhone 12 models (rumored to be one 5.4”, two 6.1” and one 6.7”) have not been completely finalized in design. Given that Apple is already using USB Type C connectors on the various MacBook models and the current iPad Pro models, having the iPhone 12 models adopt USB Type C power/sync connectors should be a cinch. Apple could offer a USB Type C to Lightning adapter as standard on European market models, though.

Next, they’ll be asking that all smartphones work using the same operating system. Which is not a bad idea, btw. Same for computers and tablets. Heck, all devices should be on the same Operating System, with adaptation for size and type.

Only one?
I have stuck with the method which (although old) is the best, and it requires tortuous mental contortions to dispute that.

Removable batteries and an external charger.

I just kinda wish that Apple would make cables that didn’t fray and fail so quickly.

If Brexit really means Brexit, the EU’s threat might be pretty toothless.

This is Apple’s choice, good, bad, or indifferent, and a government has no business forcing Apple to comply.
