Video showed flames soon after Flight 1871 had taken off.
A passenger told WABC-TV it appeared fire was coming from an engine.
I didnt know what was happening, passenger Gabrielle Guzy said. My sister said she thought it was lights but I knew it was fire from the engine. I kept reassuring myself wed be OK because we had only been in the air for a minute.

Wings have eyes!
Who knew!
Looking at the video in the original article, it looks like compressor stall to me. Dramatic, but ultimately not dangerous.
Good singing voices too.
“Were flames seen by Wing?”
“Yes”
“May I speak with him? He could have valuable information.”
“No. they took him to the hospital.”
“Hospital? What is it?”
“It’s a big building full of sick people. But that’s not important now. I must speak with Wing.”
“But he got sick!”
“Over Macho Grande?”
“Oh, I don’t think he’ll ever get over that. Those wounds run pretty deep.”
Most air crashes occur due to problems occurring within 10 minutes of take-off.
Yup. compressor stall.
How come it doesn’t say what kind of plane?
Yup...been there, done that...no biggie...
Amazing what makes the news today.
“The airline said the flight landed safely and passengers deplaned normally.”
I was a flight attendant for the same airline and was involved in emergency landings a few times. Evacuated the passengers down the slides. Never made the news. They really do try to keep it quiet, but now passengers run to the media.
And then again at landing.
I always say a silent prayer of thanks at 10,000 feet, and then again after wheels down.
A hospital what is it? Its a big building with patients in it but thats not important right now
Headquarters? What is it?
It’s a big building with Generals, but that’s not important right now.
Deplane deplane
I was on a plane that had a compressor stall at cruising altitude a few years ago. The pilot came on with the situation, and claimed he had been flying for 40 years and had never had that happen.
It does seem that there have been more of these lately - is this just more drama reporting, or is something else going on - aging engines maybe?
Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit smoking....
It was a B-757-200.
Seems to be a lot of mechanical troubles with planes this month.
