“Star Wars” Declining Fortunes as “Skywalker” Nears Billion Dollars But Way Behind Last 2 Films

“Star Wars” is shrinking at the box office. “The Rise of Skywalker” is nearing $1 billion worldwide, but it’s way behind the previous installments.

“The Force Awakens” finished its theatrical run with $2 billion worldwide. That was an enormous hit.

But the next chapter, “The Last Jedi,” ended up with $1.3 billion, a significant fall off.

“Skywalker” shows “Star Wars” fatigue. It’s not quite at $1 billion, and it’s getting ready to say goodbye. Disney will keep it in movie theaters for a while but the big push is over.

I grew up a Star Wars fan being a Generation Xer. Kathleen Kennedy and Disney sacrificed this franchise on the alter of Political Correctness. I gave up after "The Last Jedi" Did not see Solo or this last movie. In inflation adjusted domestic box office, "Rise of Skywealker" is behind the stand alone movie "Rogue One". I smile at that as "Rogue One" was by far the best movie Disney produced. A nine movie saga lasting over 40 years ends with a turd.

I really enjoyed Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi (not as much but still OK). I watched Rogue One and realized that it’s basically a remake of the original Star Wars. I stopped watching after that.

Last night my husband watched whichever one was basically a remake of “Star Wars.” I was working in another room, but I kept one ear on it. It was ludicrously bad!

The budget was $275 Million. To make a Billion from that budget for a lousy movie with a thin plot is still profitable.

Kathleen Kennedy and JJ Abrams crapped all over the foundation of Star Wars....Episodes 4-6.

They also dismissed all of the surrounding Star Wars materials created with George Lucas’ blessing.

Add to that crapping, the overt political correctness was pushed unnecessarily hard and without purpose.

I agree with others....Rogue One was great. Mandelorian is awesome. Everything else under Kathleen Kennedy sucked Wookie balls.

I totally agree... I will never forget waiting in a line that went for over a mile and seeing the opening scene on a gigantic screen with my dad in 1977. I was 10 then and I loved it all. Fast forward to this new PC garbage and I to have not gone to see the latest debacle. Solo was out and now 40 years on am completely disappointed by the path of a story and the characters. The politics and agenda movie making has turned me to the dark side. Thanks Disney for destroying one of my best childhood memories with my dad...

That transgression will never be forgiven.

Star Wars went the way of Ringling Brother Barnum and Bailey Circus. It became un-PC to parade elephants. Another institution killed by PC.

I wait until the movies are released to regular TV. I recently watched the Last Jedi. I concur with your assessment of Rogue One...

We saw Rise of Skywalker and glad we did. I can’t agree with the criticism here. I HATED Last Jedi with a white hot passion. Rise was a good Star Wars movie even the lead acted this one well. There really was no SJW bs, that lesbian kiss was an act of liberal cowardice, in a crowd scene at the end you could barely realize it was two women and you’d miss it in a blink. The story was acceptable and most importantly the characters were well presented for the fans of this 9 movie series.
I found myself mentally rewriting Return of the Sith, Last Jedi and Clone Wars (except for the last 10 minutes) were so bad I wouldn’t care if every last copy was destroyed.
However, Rise was a good movie, satisfying to the fans and a decent end to the triple trilogy.
Except I figure it can’t possible be the end.
Guilty conservative pleasure: Seeing the short ugly Asian girl noticeably reduced to nothing in the movie. Killing her beautiful sister and making her a star in the last movie was offensive SJW crap,as was the entire Last Jedi film.
If you haven’t, go see Rise.

I’m afraid maybe most people are “meh” after Last Jedi with its endless PCness.

Not that this installment has eschewed PC - at the end, I am CERTAIN I saw one of the female pilots they cameo run to her FEMALE pal and give the big lip kiss.

Just the fact they had to put “Rey” in as female lead and a black guy and then all these other non-whites (besides Poe?) they try to include as middling characters.

I don’t mind having a female lead, but it shouldn’t be so obviously pandering, and likewise I’d prefer a better presence and acting from her (the young Leia was MUCH more convincing as a tough girl and also had presence and personality).

But throwing all these non-white-guy characters at us is obvious posturing. I’d like to say that too for the in-between “SW Story” movies. Funny how suddenly all these orientals and blacks show up BETWEEN the “prequels” and TOT.

“you could barely realize it was two women and you’d miss it in a blink”

Sounds like the comparable Beauty And The Beast moment: one second near the end, almost a Bugs Bunny trans moment of goofiness with a knowing wink. Nothing worth getting flustered about.

For the record, Kathleen Kennedy has not sucked my balls.

Although she would probably offer to do so.

The Last Jedi is the worst movie I have ever seen. Each successive Star Wars movie tends to make you appreciate the previous one a little more.

You made it one movie farther that I did. I quit after "The Force Awakens". After seeing Rey win a lightsaber duel against Kylo with zero training I was done.

If I have to go the rest of my life without seeing a re-hash of the “Canyon Flying” which has been in nearly all the Star Wars since the first one, I will die a happy man.

Light beams that make noise in space and almost never hit their target are hard to believe. (The capability exists NOW to lock on a target.) The last Star Wars movie that I saw was all flashing lights, space ships flitting around in ways that would smash the crew against the walls thanks to G forces, booms, fighting, and no discernible plot. That’s why it was my last.
