The Welsh language could be set to thrive over the long-term, according to projections of whether endangered languages will flourish or fail. New Zealands native language on the other hand is projected to become extinct.
More than half of the worlds estimated 7000 languages are expected to go extinct by 2100. But the Welsh language, spoken by about half a million people today, is expected to thrive in the long term, based on a model looking at how proficiency in languages changes over time.
By contrast, te reo Maori, the language of the indigenous Maori in New Zealand, which nearly 4 per cent of the country can speak, was found to be on a path towards extinction at current learning rates.
The projections come from a team across three New Zealand universities, who built a model that splits populations up by looking at whether they fall into one of three levels of proficiency in a language, and how fast people learn. The model was first trained on census data in Wales and surveys of Welsh language use since 1991, and then run on te reo Māori using New Zealand census data.

In a world where climate change has made vowels ever more scarce, Welsh is among the most sustainable languages in the world!
Iechyd da!
Yea! A real language instead of ebolics whatever!
Ardderchog!
Vanna White’s looking forward to a big payday!
Used to have a bumper sticker:
SUPPORT THE VFW
(Vowels for Wales)
Welsh is very lyrical. Shame bout Maori. It too sounds really nice. Be happy to see the world’s most irritating ( to my ears) languages die out. Starting with Arabic and Vietnamese.
Newyddion Gwych? Sounds like someone with a lisp saying Newt Gingrich.
[[[Newyddion Gwych]]]
Newt Gingrich.
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch
Yes, that’s the name of a village in Wales.
It takes a whale to swallow it.
It’s on Ynys Mon. I was there. I can say the name.
One of my favorite Scrabble words is CRWTH.
Here it is for you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHxO0UdpoxM
You beat me to it. We just watched an episode of The Crown where young Prince Charles tries to learn Welsh. I had seen that clip of the weatherman pronouncing the name of the town in Wales and showed it to my daughter. I think he did a great job.
If you want to REALLY hear Welsh, search for episodes of Pobol Y Cwm on youtube.
Do fast people learn in a different way than slow people?
Sorry I don’t believe that many people speak Welsh on a daily basis.
Doesn’t all that whistling, squeaks and drumming sounds piss people off? ...whisper whisper ah Welsh! not Whalesh! Never mind!
