The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you wont be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
(Posting a smidge early; I'll be on the fly tomorrow.)
Asparagus question: I have read that I should cut it back when it turns brown. I live in zone 8 and have barely had a frost. My plants are mostly still green with a little yellow on top.
Should I cut it back now or wait?
Zone 8! Lucky you!
I would let it die back naturally; all the while it is still alive, it is putting nutrition back into the root stock.
Once it looks dead, brown, crispy, etc., I’d cut it back to ground level.

In zone 6 in Md, can anyone tell me about planting Elderberry?
Thanks for this thread!
Nice welcome card. Garlic is growing well, rye and vetch is up. We’ve had 50-63 degree weather all week. We did some patio cleaning and relaxed in our coffee corner of the greenhouse/sunroom.
Listening to Mark Steyn keeps me from overwatering the aloe plant.
I’ve never grown Elderberry, but we have quite a number of wild Elderberry shrubs along our mile-long driveway!
My Aunt would pick off bunches of the blooms and dry them for tea, but then, of course, you don’t get any berries!
The birds love them, but they are such a PITA because the berries are so tiny. I think I’ve made Elderberry Jelly ONCE in my life due to the PITA factor, LOL! They are very useful as a medicinal plant, too.
The cultivated Elderberry that don’t produce berries to eat are really lovely as a landscape plant, though!

I don’t know anything about Elderberries except my grandmother telling me this is the best berry for your health and was very respectful for the Elderberry Bush.
So, I’m asking: best varieties, type of exposure to sun, where to obtain seedlings, etc.
I see some listed in catalogs but not much specification.
Thanks for any help.
We’ve been enjoying unseasonably warm weather over the past week here in Central Missouri.
Judy came home on Wednesday so I’m going fishing tomorrow. It’s too muddy to do anything worthwhile in the garden anyway... lol
This is the company I worked for, for a decade. This should answer all of your Elderberry questions. :)

The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California will serve king oyster mushrooms scallops and wild mushroom risotto,
along with roasted baby purple and green Brussels sprouts and carrots. A chilled golden beet soup will be served as an appetizer.
Icelandic Glacial, a naturally alkaline and sustainable natural spring water will be served in glass bottles to eliminate plastic waste
Yay! Mother Erf is SAVED. *SMIRK*
Looks good, though. We had (real, not pretend) pan-seared Scallops on New Year’s Eve. :)
A good chef can make anything taste good.
Wind from the East - fish bite least.
Wind from the South - blows the hook out of their mouth!
Wind from the North - no Fishermen go forth.
Wind from the West, fish bite best!
See? I paid attention when my Grandpa was teaching me the important Life Skills one needs to survive. ;)
Good luck! :)
How lovely!!
