U-Haul will no longer hire smokers in many states

U-Haul has a New Year's resolution: cut down on hiring people who smoke. The moving company said that it won't hire nicotine users in states where it is legal to do so, saying that it wants to ensure a "healthier workforce."

The new policy will start Feb. 1, and won't apply to those hired before then. U-Haul said the initiative is part of its commitment to establishing a healthy corporate culture.

"We are deeply invested in the well-being of our Team Members," said Jessica Lopez, U-Haul Chief of Staff, in a statement. "Nicotine products are addictive and pose a variety of serious health risks. This policy is a responsible step in fostering a culture of wellness at U-Haul, with the goal of helping our Team Members on their health journey."

The policy complements U-Haul's "Healthier You" program, which helps workers quit smoking. The program also offers gym and personal training reimbursements, nutrition plans and more.

The gay lifestyle choice is extremely unhealthy...

So can companies refuse to hire homosexuals?

I am so glad my mandatory full time working days are behind me. So many rules. I saw this coming over 20 years ago.
The secondhand smoke hysteria closed a lot of very nice restaurants and bars.

When I lived in Charleston, South Carolina during the 1980’s, I could even smoke my cigarettes while riding the public bus!
I recall that little bell chime on planes that signaled Smoking Lamp is now back on!!
Ahh, the good old days.

NICOTINE AND CAFFEINE ARE ADDICTIVE STIMULANTS1 and not all "nicotine users" are smokers!!

If U-Haul will not hire those who CHEW NICOTINE GUM OR CONSUME NICOTINE LOZENGES, will they also NOT hire those who DRINK CAFFEINATED COFFEE?

NICOTINE AND CAFFEINE ARE ADDICTIVE!

A GOOD attorney would argue that U-Haul's hiring guideline here is DISCRIMINATORY because it does NOT include CAFFEINATED COFFEE DRINKERS!

I’ll bet they have far more obese employees than smoking ones and obesity causes all kinds of expensive health problems. Are they going to refuse to hire the fat?

Not just smokers. The company wants a workforce that is not addicted to the drug nicotine regardless of how it is administered. I’m sure they will have no problem getting one.

I can't say I blame U-Haul for this. Once you have a law in place that requires employers to pay for medical insurance for their employees, it's only a matter of time before employers start using medical cost risk factors in their hiring decisions.

Let's see what happens when employers figure out how to steer clear of hiring people from THESE groups:

1. Homosexual men.
2. Women of child-bearing age.
3. Marijuana smokers.

I remember those days too.

Think it has to do with all the smoking breaks smokers have to take. It’s been shown they do have to take more breaks than non-smokers and as you said with more restrictions these smokers now have to go outside to smoke which takes even more time. It makes the non-smoking employees feel like they have to do more work and really they do, they are not outside every 15 minutes puffing on a stick.

You all blame everything but the tobacco companies. I have a friend who smokes and she tells me that before the companies added all this crap to make people so addicted that she remembers her grandpa smoking. He would come home at the end of the day and smoke one or two and that was it. It was not a case of “he had to have it” and “being chained to his box of cigaretts”. She told me they’ve done this on purpose and it’s taken the fun out of it and to kill us.

My employer doesn’t want me to use caffeine pills, despite that it does help keep me awake during slow mental periods. I’ve learned to shut up about my taking them.

When you socialize the cost, you make your lifestyle other people’s business.

We need to attack the sexual insanity this way. You just made it legal to give people HIV without their knowledge? You’re supporting spreading diseases through wild hookups? We can quarantine you and punish you as a literal threat to everyone else’s safety.

and smokers should say “our lifestyle choice is less dangerous and costly than the gay lifestyle- why single us out?”

See what the company’s reaction to that would be-
