I just engaged in a conversation with a fellow here regarding U'Haul's decision to not hire any employees who use nicotine products. The conversation eventually evolved into politics and whether or not an employer had the right to either hire a potential employee or fire an employee based on their political beliefs.
It’s unConstitutional. therefore illegal.
The people you work with should never know your political beliefs.
They should never know anything that doesn’t have anything to do with work.
It used to be an unwritten rule in polite society, you never discussed religion or politics at work.
If someone owns a business they should be able to hire whoever they want.
No.
Political beliefs are supposedly protected.
Not that you’d know that.
Especially during the Obama administration when conservatives were being singled out and fired simply because of a difference in opinion.
Yep...any at-will state should be golden.
A private employer has no obligation for free speech in the workplace.
You do not really want to get into protecting an employer from hiring and firing at will.
Flip side is: you keep your politics to yourself in the workplace, preserve professional decorum. Outside of work, on your own time, fine. At work, you focus on work.
“Its unConstitutional. therefore illegal.”
Care to point to the constitutional clause that says an employer cannot fire for beliefs? Hint: It doesn’t exist and it is not illegal.
Hire = Yes
Fire = No
The Congress cannot pass laws that infringe on free speech.
A private business is not bound by that restriction.
It would be horrible business, but it is allowed.
Would you really want a full bloodied Nazi a-hole spouting their crap on the shop floor? Or a black panther?
Political beliefs are a protected Freedom of Speech Right.
So No. Employers cannot discriminate.
As a former career labor/employment law attorney, private sector employers can generally make hiring/employment decisions based on criteria except for those which are prohibited by federal and/or state law. The federal prohibitions are religion, race, national origin, sex [in the “gender” sense], age (over age 40 protected), disability or perceived disability, and pregnancy.

Ever hear of Hollywood??
A private company should have the freedom to hire and fire people people based on their politics.
What you are supporting is blatant discrimination based on political beliefs, which is contrary to what the "At Will" laws were intended in order to protect the employer.
Another classic example of unintended consequences...........
I wouldnt hire a leftist. Employers should be able to dismiss any employee for any reason, but they cant. This is the reason my former employer started only hiring temps, possibly taking them on as employees after several months.
“Free speech” only applies to prohibit government action, not action by private employers.
This.
Good luck finding a job in education, entertainment, city services, etc., if your political views are made clear on Farcebook, Twitter, etc..
And if you DO have a job in these fields, were you hired RECENTLY?.. Doubtful!
I should have added that union and/or “protected concerted” activity by employees or job applicants is protected as to private sector employers by the National Labor Relations Act.
