The wind — of all things — toppled a New York City wind turbine which then crushed an unoccupied parked car, according to reports.
The incident Monday afternoon in the Bronx had elected officials who represent the area shaking their heads.
“A wind turbine should not be able to be taken down by the wind,” the New York Post quoted Jamaal Bailey, who serves in the New York State Senate, as saying.
The wind turbine was erected recently atop a six-story parking garage, according to reports. No injuries were reported, according to Fox 5 New York. …

I drove through Route 80 in Iowa about five years ago and there were giant wind farms that seemed to go on for miles.
None of them were turning except for an occasional one here and there.

WIND turbines are allegedly designed to operate in the WIND. A quick look at past weather readings will show average and peak wind speeds. Is this a case of affirmative action engineers, or just pig-headed management?
If they shake their heads fast enough maybe the can create enough wind to run the turbines

From the video it was an ‘egg-beater’ type on a vertical mount. Looks like the blades went first then the anchors. I am not sure that these ‘egg-beater’ types can be ‘feathered’ in extreme conditions to reduce the wind loads. One or more engineer types may be (legitimately) worrying about their ‘PE’ stamps on the application & construction documents. Happy that there were no human injuries!
