A movement to rename Dixie Highway — for some a painful reminder of a tragic, racist past — might be gaining steam in Broward County.
The argument is being made by one of Broward County’s youngest elected officials after she heard of a similar effort in Miami-Dade.
The name Dixie harkens back to an era that glorified slavery and white supremacy, says 22-year-old Hallandale Beach Vice Mayor Sabrina Javellana. Her fellow city commissioners agree, approving a resolution in early December urging Broward commissioners to take up the cause.

Believe it or not, Broward County actually voted 80,000 to 60,000 in favor of Barry Goldwater in 1964!
Today, Broward has a population of 2 million. Non-Hispanic whites are just 35% of the residents. Black and Hispanic residents both have 30%.
Putting that in perspective, King County (Seattle) has 2.2 million.
Does this mean the Hershey Highway is heterophobic?

Our city renamed Pierce Rd to Buck Owens Blvd. 7th Standard to Merle Haggard Hwy. Parts of Cottonwood to Martin Luther King Blvd. Guess what I still call them?

Maybe it just looks this way to me because of my particular life experiences, but where you have a vet without a family, or who can’t live with their family, some sort of group living might be better. With an acceptable degree of privacy, of course.
