A movement to rename Dixie Highway — for some a painful reminder of a tragic, racist past — might be gaining steam in Broward County.
The argument is being made by one of Broward County’s youngest elected officials after she heard of a similar effort in Miami-Dade.
The name Dixie harkens back to an era that glorified slavery and white supremacy, says 22-year-old Hallandale Beach Vice Mayor Sabrina Javellana. Her fellow city commissioners agree, approving a resolution in early December urging Broward commissioners to take up the cause.

Dixie highways are all over Florida. I have to say it was weird to see after leaving Maryland. But that’s what they named the roads. The history is still there even if you try to hide it.

Before even U.S. Highways, there were “Auto Trails.” One of them was the Dixie Highway.

Correct. In 1925 the Agriculture Department created the US highway system to rationalize a disorganized system of auto trails. That responsibility was transferred to the Transportation Department in 1965.
So must be Springsteen for mentioning the Dixie Highway in this "Born in the USA" cut... :)

It was built to connect the Midwest with the southern states.
And no, we are not changing the name.
There are several bridged along the Dixie Highway. Use them to get over it.
She is for gender equality but is part of an womyn’s group. If the topic of this article is among her biggest concerns at the age of 22, she has it pretty easy. She should go into a VA and thank the MALES who were drafted into foreign wars for their service to OUR country.
