GLADSTONE, Ore. (KGW) A grandfather in Oregon wanted to do something special for his grandkids this Christmas, and his idea makes for a pretty unique gift that can be used for years to come.
"Every year, we make a big deal and every week coming into Christmas, advent, every week we give them a gift,' explained Doug Hayes, who is a grandfather to 10 grandchildren.
However, this years gift is not the kind you can fit under a tree. Instead, Hayes wanted to do something a little different.
A family member shot cell phone video as Hayes presented the grandchildren with their gift. In the video, you can see the surprise on their faces and hear them ask, "Is that it? You got a bus!"
Hayes bought a bus so he can drive the kids to school every morning.
"I thought, 'gee whiz, maybe there's some way that I can give them a memory that will last all their life,'" Hayes explained.
The kids go to a small Christian school that does not have school buses, so when they saw him drive up in one, they were pretty excited.
"It was a big surprise," one grandkid explained.
"I was really stunned. I never expected him to buy a bus, Hayes' grandson Christian Hayes agreed.
The bus is fittingly named Grandfather Express." The kids cannot wait to hop on board for their first ride to school in January. They think all of their friends will be impressed and excited to see it.
"I think my friends are all gonna be stunned," Christian said.
"I think they're gonna say, 'wow, you get to ride a bus,' another grandkid exclaimed! "No one else does."
Hayes hopes his unique gift will create memories they will never forget.
"Well, there is a sense of pride and excitement, I thought, 'Who does this? This is crazy,' Hayes said. "So, we're so excited about it, and it's something that we are hopeful they'll carry into their lives."
The short bus? What does that say about his kids?
Very nice.

It says do the math instead being a rectum!
The public school system will probably make a stink about him using a yellow bus without government permission.
There is a Hollywood celeb who did this for his grandkids to go do pickups and drop offs,
Well-played, sir.
Those kids are going to have a rough time in middle school.
30 years ago this would have been the subject of a news segment at the end of the 6:30 news. One of those feel-good stories.
Now the first thing I wondered is how long before some idiot online screams to the local (whomever) and somehow gets this shut-down.
Well, there’s only 10 of them to haul around! :)
They’re in a Christian school now, so will probably keep with it through HS, I hope! :)
How long before someone complains about it. Something, anything, just to complain. Just wait.
Yes. Sadly. :(
They look like fairly happy kids.
For the most part.....I think kids having lots of cousins in close proximity is very positive. :)
This is cool. :)
Well, because of passenger car capacity and child restraint laws we just can’t haul them all in one car anymore like we used to. lol
Now that is just downright adorable! It’s what most Grandads would do if the situation was right.
Enjoy it now, because soon the older kids may want the choice to ride with their school chums. But so what? Even if this only lasts for three or four years, memories are now being created for the whole group. Sweet memories that can never be taken away, not even by Father Time.
He should have a Children’s Storybook written about this,
one with big and colorful illustrations. His very own Partridge Family.
It even says, “SHORT B US” on the back. LOL! Sounds like a fun grandpa.
This may inspire the school to start up it’s own bus system
for the other students. Right now, there is no transit bus.
