The tragic last words of one of the pilots killed in the crash of a cargo plane in Houston contracted by Amazon earlier this year were, Lord, you have my soul, according to a chilling transcript of the cockpit voice recorder.
Capt. Ricky Blakely, First Officer Conrad Jules Aska and Mesa Airlines Capt. Sean Archuleta, who was riding in the jump seat, were killed Feb. 23 when the Boeing 767 operated by Atlas Air plunged into Trinity Bay.
Seconds after air traffic controllers rerouted the aircraft around some precipitation, the crew began losing control on approach to Bush Intercontinental Airport.
Aska, who had a record of repeatedly flunking flight tests, may have mistakenly thought the jet was stalling when its nose was pointed too high, so he jerked it down as the captain fought to pull up, according to the Nation Transportation Safety Board report.
He added full takeoff power without telling Blakely, resulting in pandemonium in the cockpit, according to the report.

Aska did not list his entire employment history when he was hired at Atlas Air, omitting two jobs with Air Wisconsin and CommutAir that ended after he couldnt complete the training.
The director of training told investigators that with that information we would not have offered him a position based on the (co-pilots) failure to disclose that information on his application, KHOU reported.
He also failed his practical exam when he was first hired at Atlas and had left a prior job with Mesa Airlines when he was unable to upgrade to captain after two unsatisfactory simulator sessions.

“Aska, who had a record of repeatedly flunking flight tests”
Wait, what?
Well that’s certainly nicer than...
“OH F-——G S—T!!”
Their HR procedures need to be re-evaluated. This is almost criminal ineptitude, at least based on what was in the article.
And it’s certainly much nicer than...
“Allahu Ackbar!”
Or “Allah akbar!”
Its all nice he is with the Lord now, but reliance on the Holy Savior has some conditions to it.
I sure hope and pray that NOT being a perpetual dumbass your entire human existence is one of them.
I’m confused. There were 2 captains onboard and 1st officer. The pilot is trying to fly the plans and everything that the 1st officer was doing was counter to the pilots actions. What was the other captain doing? One would think he would have been trying to at least verbally offer advice to the either the Piot or the 1st officer.
Lying on his job application to get a job he is unqualified for and thus endangering people is a nice touch.
Affirmative action can get you killed.
There are no conditions on reliance on Jesus Christ. He has done it all, all we have to do is call on His name and believe. Apparently this pilot has done that and is with His Savior forever in glory.
Reminds me of the PSA flight on approach to San Diego years ago when they collided with small aircraft, possibly a Cessna...One of those in the cockpit as they were nose diving down on a neighborhood...said his last words, which I believe were, “I love you mom”.
Well yes....reliance does have at least two conditions... humility and pure intentions.
What kind of name is Aska? Sounds foreign to me.
Good News for all of us!
Something very wrong there, really poor (ie non-existent) crew coordination. Even just flying with my buddy in his 2 seater we always coordinate “I’ve got the aircraft” and “Copy, you’ve got the aircraft.” When you *don’t* have the aircraft, you keep your mitts off the primary flight controls, period.
Antigua...Ah, reaping the many benefits of diversity and affirmative action...Good thing this was cargo and not a passenger aircraft...

Apparently it was Aska who begged for mercy on his soul as quoted, for anyone wondering (and who didnt want to go to the source to find out ).
The other captain was from a different airline so I would assume he was just hitching a ride in the jump seat to whatever airport his next flight was out of (or to get home).
