'Absolutely Not a Choice.' Elizabeth Smart's Father on Coming Out as Gay, Leaving Mormon Church
Time ^ | DECEMBER 10, 2019 | MAHITA GAJANAN

Ed Smart, the father of kidnapping victim Elizabeth Smart, has shared how difficult it was to come to terms with his sexuality in a new interview.

The 64-year-old Smart, who came out as gay in August, told CBS This Morning that he struggled to accept himself after a lifetime of believing that being attracted to men was “not acceptable.”

“I was praying that I was not [gay]. I didn’t want to believe that I was,” Smart said. “But how do you cure being gay? There is no cure. And for all of those out there that are struggling in the same spot, there is no cure.”

Smart came out in a letter posted to his Facebook in August, in which he detailed that he was in the process of divorcing his wife of 34 years, Lois. Smart added that he was no longer comfortable being a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly known as the Mormon church. While the church announced in April that the children of people in the LGBT community could be baptized without approval from leadership, it still considers same-sex marriage to be a “serious transgression” and acting on same-sex attractions to be a “sin.”

Speaking with CBS This Morning‘s Gayle King in an interview airing in parts this week, Smart said he spoke with church leaders while trying to figure out his feelings.

“I literally called my bishop up one morning, and I said, ‘You know, I feel like I’ve stabbed Lois in the heart,'” Smart said. “And I went to my other church leader, and I said to him, ‘So am I gay? Am I gay?’ And he said to me, ‘I don’t think so.’ He said, ‘You know, there’s this spectrum.'”

"... you’ve had to make some other choices to be moral in life. "

When I was very young I was convinced that every murderer had to be "insane" to kill people. It is typically such a selfish act with such severe consequences for the murderer that I couldn't even imagine how anything other than insanity could explain it.

Since then I have learned to recognize that there is such a thing as "evil". Many, if not most, murderers are evil. But not all of them.

I think it quite likely that the Texas Tower shooter from years ago was not necessarily evil. After his death he was discovered at autopsy to have a significant brain tumor.

So, you tell me; was he evil? Was his a moral transgression?

I also don't believe that it takes a brain tumor to damage a brain. I think some people are simply born with damaged brains. We know that some environmental factors, like maternal drug abuse, can cause brain damage. I believe that poor genetic heritage can also result in having a brain that I would call "abnormal". I'm also convinced that a normal child can be mistreated in ways that lead to abnormal behavior.

From a practical perspective, we simply don't know enough to distinguish between immorality and brain damage in every case. I believe that there are plenty of each and that the public deserves to be protected from the risk of doing nothing to protect us from such persons.

We are at risk from the actions of evil people. We are also at risk from the actions of people whose brains are not normal. We are a long way from understanding whether this is two different things or just two points on a very broad spectrum. If it is a broad spectrum, then each of us lies somewhere along that spectrum, not necessarily at either limit.

Yes, pretty amazing she seems to be as much a normal, friendly Mormoness as she does.

"How could humans be born homosexual? The species would have ended at 1!"

You might want to check your math. If, for example, the proportion of people born homosexual is 1%, do you believe that this would wipe out the entire species? I don't think so.

We agree that there are some medical conditions that can impact the situation. Regrettably the doctors don’t know how to cure many of them anymore than the clerics have been able to cure evil 😈

The left’s puppet masters would have everyone believe that sexual orientation is not a choice a human brain can make. However, all the while these same masters, along with their media co-conspirators, devise to create false political narratives, full of illogical claims, and know from their own malignant experience in perfecting such narratives that most of these same human brains will come to accept the falsehoods as reality.

So you lived 60+ years but it wasn’t a choice that you finally decided to act on your impulses????

That's what gets me. He's now 64, in the September of his years, and he can't stand firm for the remaining years? Why is it that sexual perversity trumps everything? It used to be we did not discuss such things publicly. Now we are at a point where criticism of sexual deviancy is what we can't discuss publicly.

Looking the other way is one way (the Bush doctrine.) And then it can get worse. Or we can address it, rebuild our culture and take back our country. If you don’t want to address it, how about you pick another post.

Everyone has a sin nature. Everyone is tempted. Even Christ was tempted. Some unfortunates are tempted by same sex attraction. That does NOT mean they have to act on the temptation. Acting on temptation is a CHOICE.

I’m heterosexual. I’m sexually attracted to women who are not my wife. As a Christian, I do not want to act on this temptation. It doesn’t mean the temptation goes away. It only means I resist and get better at resisting as I mature in Christ.

A believer doesn’t surrender to temptation, and if they do and sin in a moment of weakness, they repent, confess, and do their best to not repeat the sin again. That’s what separates believers in Christ from unbelievers.

Christ gives us increasing victory over the sin nature in time...if we truly love Him.

It absolutely is a choice. Adultery is a choice. All sexual acts are a choice. They can be prevented by doing nothing.

Absolutely right. We don’t get to choose our weaknesses AKA temptations, but we do get to choose whether to act on them.

I am DEEPLY ASHAMED of Free Republic over this thread.

In fact, it would not be putting it too strongly, to say I am AGHAST.

I mean, a thread of over 60 posts on a gay Mormon, and not a single person has posted
