As long as these cats are getting “fixed” somewhere during the process, I am all for it.
There’s a guy in Hoover AL doing the same thing. My wife’s best friend checks them for him occasionally.
That’s a nifty idea, as long as the stacks don’t slide off.
Maybe they are secured to something solid.
My first question is are these disposed of and replaced, or must the coolers be cleaned? If that part could be organized w/o being too labor intensive, it’s a good idea.
Check once and a while to make sure no snakes, possums or raccoons have decided to take up residence.
What a great idea! I have a female cat with two kittens living under the deck across the street. They’re probably warm in this extreme weather but maybe it might help if I made one of these cooler houses..........
Last spring I had over 30,,around my property...and a nearby lake.
“The discarded coolers” sounds like a good name for a rock and roll band... :)

I made a shelter out of a styro cooler. Cats liked it! An opossum moved in for a while, but that was fun too, they are pretty cool even though messy.
I modded a have-a-hart so that I could remotely trigger it so i could trap specific cats (no point trapping the same one five times) and take them off to be fixed.
haha ping!
I kept my sailboat in a midatlantic marina. They had a self serve ice locker where you could buy ice bags in an honor system deposit box; drop in $3 and take a bag of ice.
My Friend came down from NY and said to me, “I can’t believe this works!”
In NY we would have stolen the money and two families would be living in the insulated boxes and they would curse you for invading their space if you opened the coolers.
Would like to adopt some feral cats to get all the mice in the neighborhood. These coolers look like a good solution to where they’d live!
I often made cat shelters out of cheap styrofoam coolers... the plastic ones like in this article are probably more durable, if not as warm; And a lot more expensive, if you are buying them new.
Wow! Great idea. I’m a cat guy and currently have three. Two ferals and one old house cat. These old ice chests repurposed for a good second life.
Had a "notched ear" feral move in and stayed in our yard for five years - "Frankie" would yowl when he caught a mouse until I came out and took a look at it. He never let us get close to him, but loved it when we talked softly to him.
He died somewhere last year - a stray lives a very hard life.
At least we were able to take the edge off for him. I miss that little guy.
A feral mother cat brought her male kitten to our deck. We have lost cats to coyotes and didn’t want another. But he wormed his way into our hearts and we took him to the Vet and got him fixed and various shots. He spends most of the day outside and comes in every night. He faithfully uses the liter box. He is affectionate to my wife and me but will let no other human come near him We have had him for 3-1/2 years and I have never found a flea on him. He is the purrfect cat.
