The winter is a rough time for stray animals, many of them die from the freezing temperatures. Thankfully, an animal lover is saving the furry creatures by providing them with a warm place to sleep.
A man named Philip Rogich (also known as the Batman of Ogden), based in Ogden, Utah is building shelters from upcycled coolers for stray and feral cats to sleep during the cold season. He was inspired by a man on Facebook making these cooler shelters, and he decided to try making them too. Then he posted on Facebook asking people to give up their discarded or unwanted coolers, and it took off. Rogich has already made 77 cooler shelters and has enough coolers to make 15 more.

Yes!!
"The Stray Cats" is a pretty good one, too.
haha ping!
I kept my sailboat in a midatlantic marina. They had a self serve ice locker where you could buy ice bags in an honor system deposit box; drop in $3 and take a bag of ice.
My Friend came down from NY and said to me, “I can’t believe this works!”
In NY we would have stolen the money and two families would be living in the insulated boxes and they would curse you for invading their space if you opened the coolers.
‘As long as these cats are getting fixed somewhere during the process, I am all for it.’
I managed to catch our feral female and get her spayed; it wasn’t particularly difficult with a humane trap...it makes a huge difference...
Lots of luck getting a feral cat to trust you.
If a cat is not socialized while young, it will never trust.
That looks like my Oliver, except a little smaller.
Damn I miss him. Who would have thought....
Had tickets for the Brian Setzer Orchestra Christmas show. He had to cancel the tour due to a tinnitus flare up. I hope he recovers somewhat. Theres no complete recovery. I hate it for him. I was really looking forward to seeing him again.
That’s too bad, he’s great.
Feral cat had kitties in the garage. Eventually, she let me adopt them. She also eventually let me pet her but she wouldn’t stay around until the next litter. Those, she took away for some reason. Several months later, one of the older litter brought the newer ones home.
Tried to catch the mama to take to the vet but after getting clawed half to death gave up. Two years now and one of the newer ones still barely lets anyone pet him. Managed to get two collars on him and got two collars off. Good thing as now his neck is too large for cat collars. He comes in at night most of the time but stayed out last night when is was 20. First litter had a smart daddy. Second litter not so smart.
Would like to adopt some feral cats to get all the mice in the neighborhood. These coolers look like a good solution to where they’d live!
Did you steal that line from Pelosi?
I often made cat shelters out of cheap styrofoam coolers... the plastic ones like in this article are probably more durable, if not as warm; And a lot more expensive, if you are buying them new.
Wow! Great idea. I’m a cat guy and currently have three. Two ferals and one old house cat. These old ice chests repurposed for a good second life.
I worked with a group over in the DFW(TX) area called Barn Cats. They trapped feral cats and neutered them, then they placed them in barns on farms or wherever in large crates for about a month. They were fed and and then after a few weeks were let out. They stayed around and kept the rat problem under control.
