Spiraling Morningside Park crime stats show a neighborhood gripped by violence
New York Post ^ | December 14, 2019 | Sara Dorn and Ruth Weissmann

The fatal mugging of Barnard College freshman Tessa Majors in Morningside Park last week — allegedly at the hands of three boys ages 13 and 14 — came as little surprise in a neighborhood already reeling from rising crime and roving bands of violent youths.

The park was the most dangerous in the city for muggings in the first nine months of 2019, logging 11 robberies in that period, according to NYPD statistics.

By comparison, there were 10 reported muggings in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park and nine in Claremont Park in The Bronx in that same period.

Reports of violent crime and sex crimes spiked 82 percent in Morningside Park and on its perimeter in the past year ending Dec. 8, according to the NYPD.

There have been 21 reported muggings in the park and on its perimeter this year compared with 11 during the same period a year prior.

Much of the violence comes at the hands of young teenagers, police and residents say.

“I was robbed in Morningside Park in August,” a 24-year-old man told The Post, describing the location as one block north from where Majors was attacked.

Three or four kids, maybe 13 or 14 years old, threatened the man with a box cutter at 2 p.m. on a Friday afternoon and he handed them $120 in cash, he recalled. The account was confirmed by cops.

“I was told by police that it was not a very safe place to be,” the victim said. “Most people know somebody who has gotten robbed there.”

Teens have been a constant menace at a deli a block from where Majors, 18, was murdered Wednesday as she walked through the park at 7 p.m.

New Yorkers elected DeBlasio. I hope they and he will wise up.

On the issue of reparations, if one asserts that whites today are collectively responsible for the sins of white slaveowners than 100 years ago, then blacks are collectively responsible for crimes committed by blacks. I don't believe in collective responsibility, but if one does, it cuts both ways.

This is DeBlasio’s doing along with the city council. I wonder if they even see this as a problem or just deserts for their warped view of past sins?

Who’s doing the gripping?

Haven’t there been very significant changes in NYPD patrol and detain policies since DeBlasio took office?

An extremely salient point...

first of all, slavery ended 150 yrs ago, was done by a tiny minority of people and I thought the ex slaves already got the mule and $40....

and no black alive today was ever a slave and neither were there parents and probably not grandparents...

I too do not believe in collective responsibility....

but there is really no need to sugar coat anything....we know who is doing the violence, and who are acting like the sacrificial lambs.....

if one is going to a crime ridden park at least be prepared to defend your self instead of letting ferals steal outright from you....

where is the pride?....

This is not to you about the article writer cited.

I’m not going to let something just go past in that article.

We are not allowed to say many things because of Political Correctness and our loss of Freedom of Speech. Why should a newspaper writer be given free reign?

To allow an article to call the experienced criminals who allegedly committed violent crimes ‘boys” and “kids” is wrong.

Victims of muggings cannot get back their sense of security and often have flashbacks.

Women especially. I knew a student assistant at the university where I worked and she trembled remembering the night a group of 6-8 juveniles grabbed her, fondled her, beat her and she knows were about to rape her when she and they heard someone coming. They scrambled away. No suspects.
She had to spend all night in the hospital with her head propped upward on an awkward U-shaped device in case there was bleeding in her brain. She said it was like being tortured all night long.

People are raped, beaten, robbed and sometimes killed by juveniles. Trivializing these crimes is wrong and journalistc malpractice, in my opinion.

I will accept juvenile offenders or simply juveniles. Or accused or alleged of these.

To be a victim of a juvenile offender hurts decidedly as much as of an adult one.

Ah, but NY & NYC are much too civilized to allow you to have the means to defend yourself. Had the Tessa emptied a revolver/pistol into the would be thieves, we’d now be subjected to headlines: “White, privileged, Barnard college girl guns down young teens”. Of course, she’d still be alive, albeit in a cell. There would be marches and prominent politicians would condemn her for her “hate crime”.

Violence causes crime.

Guns cause crime.

Ban nouns!

You suggest that the young woman’s parents were irresponsible to not send her University of Virginia. Do you forget about the heinous murder of a coed at the University of Virginia?

Sadly, that type of thing tends to happen in many college towns. However, it would seem the odds are more favorable for safety just about anywhere else other than in the bowels of a hideous mega city known for it’s rough edges.

I don't believe in collective responsibility

Collective responsibility is a fact of life. The disparate administration of justice should cause the black community to unite and demand justice for all victims, not just blacks. But that never happens. Their silence is assent.

OJ got off because black jurors cared nothing about two white victims.

The black community is on board with this travesty. They are quick to point out any real or perceived (mostly, fabricated) crimes against blacks. But, instead of getting all riled up about black on white crime; instead of forming protests for equal treatment for victimized whites; it's always crickets chirping.

And because of this, whites are more and more noticing that blacks don't reciprocate. Blacks are in it for themselves (as a community; as a demographic).

Whites are realizing that we're on our own and no matter how much we give to entitlement minded demands by blacks, it benefits us nothing. Because blacks will continue to murder whites and the black community is ok with that.

As far as reparations? I have no problem. I'll pay them myself. Just show me a former slave from pre 1865 and I'll gladly give him a few bucks. All others can go pound sand.

The evil of Marxists who have for the past 60 years years taken over the Columbia University colleges and grad schools has been the bigger and the biggest continuing and growing danger. Parents should fear that, since that is in the face of every student at the university’s various colleges.

What happened is chilling, horrendous, and heart-breaking. Some kind of buddy system and on demand escort system needs to be set up (some rural colleges do that for the same reason), and city police patrols, but just campus police, but, as you said, murders of co-eds has happened in recent years, too, in peaceful college and university settings.

Crime statistics for U.S. cities are readily available. A google search could be conducted to see whether stats are collected across the U.S. for violent crimes on campuses per capita of student enrollment.
