I have options, but not enough knowledge.
Linux will run it like new... I have a current up to date mint cinnamon running on a 2002 E-machine. :)
I have an up to date linux Mint 18.3 running on a 2002 E-machine.
nm my question about docking- looks like it will be bottlenecked by usb 2 speed in my case-
I didn’t read through all the responses.
Go here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
Download the media creation tool.
Run it, come back after a 90 minutes to 3 hours.
Congrats, you are on Windows 10.
If you download the media creation tool and run it from inside windows 7, it will upgrade the machine if you have enough ram. I've done at least 30 machines in the past two weeks and another 50 or so to go. It works.
You don't need to boot to other media or any such thing.
Thanks, but I don’t need help upgrading to 19.x. I’m already there. I’d just like to move up to 19.3, although I’ve heard that version is experiencing some growing pains.
Really, all I’m trying to do is to get Linux to stop freezing. It works fine, otherwise.
“Best thing to do is try different versions. Maybe try Mint with the MATE desktop instead of Cinnamon or try Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Kubuntu etc”
He is not up to or in the position to play with that Pollard. But I think rebuilding the Grub and restoring the packages on his 19.2 might realign everything and repair it’s self. :)
We are working on that... :)
oh i thought your post said you hoped it would upgrade to 19.3-
yeah it shouldn’t be freezing- something wrong fur sure- If it were my issue, i’d probably reformat the petition and start all over again- see if that helped the issue, if not I’d go back to 18.3, even 17.whatever if need be- hopefully you find the issue- frustrating when it doesn’t work right- I don’t know enough about os’s to fix stuff liek that via repairs- unfortunately-
“Think I’ll boot her up in Linux to see if there are any available updates. Maybe it’ll upgrade me to 19.3.”
Please let me do some homework about that first sir...
“PS, you can install the MATE desktop right along side Cinnamon. Then just choose MATE when you log in. If Cinnamon is set up to log you in automatically with no log in screen, then youd have to log out of Cinnamon to get a log in screen. There should be a place to set the default desktop to log in to.”
Yes, he absolutely can add this additional optional OS to his grub menu. He now has Win 10 with Mint cinnamon as options to boot from, adding a different one would not hurt anything. But for my friend Windflier here removing any of these later could be an issue he might not want to deal with.
We should just try to repair what he has first then go from there. :)
Please let me do some homework about that first sir...
Okey dokey, Cap'n. Thank you!
“program another drive (yeah, a 4th one!) with 18.3 then upgrade to 19.X as you did and see if that makes a difference. “
Bob did this, And I’m not sure but it might actually retain some of 18.3 stuff to help run older hardware that might be absent from a new complete 19.2 download. Not sure, but It would have to go take the time to read the source on both to see if 19.2 removes too much stuff from the previous 18 when it installs. Couple hours of reading source to know for sure. lol
Oh good, you are on. PM sent my friend. :)
I think we just need to rebuild the Grub and run a restore check for his packages. the download ISO file might have had a glitch or too many protons running through it when he downloaded it. lol
Rebuilding from the Grub menu will do a self check to make sure all the ducks are in a row. And if they are not it will go grab what it need to put them in a row as they should be. :)
I am out on the road at the moment, but can ping the windows list when I return home. In the meantime it looks like quite a few people have jumped on the thread anyway.
Now how are we supposed to catch that windows billboard when you are out hauling it all over the place? lol
2x 5.25" Tray-Less SATA Mobile Rack for 3.5" HDD Enclosure Hot-swap Dock
These are very similar to what's in my computer tower now.
Check out link in Post #97 above.
thanks, looks like it needs a dock too? I’m not familiar with all this stuff- would the dock hook up inside the computer? I assume it would- I don’t have anymore available SATA cable connections or whatever the smaller HD wires are called- (There’s two- the larger flat main one, the smaller one that also hooks to the HD- )
Sure would love to be able to hot swap though and still retain full HD speed not bottlenecked by usb- Having s hard time visualizing how that would fit in computer and be accessible- i don’t have slots in front of case that are open
I agree. I am keeping W7 on my machines indefinitely. The fact that Microsoft will not support it is irrelevant. I have not needed their support for years. Anti virus support is available from several sources.
