To think a park is unsafe because someone was murdered there is to "re-demonize the image". Teens questioned over stabbing death of Barnard freshman Tessa Majors.

“This is going to re-demonize the image,” she said.

Clearly the most important thing...forget the dead girl.

City parks at night are dangerous. A walk in Morningside Park has always been considered to be a ticket to hell.

What the hell kind administrators do they have at Barnard these days. Morningside Park is a no go zone. Shame on Barnard for not clueing in clueless students.

Major crime in New York City was down about 1 percent this year through Dec. 1 compared with the same period last year, but murder was up about 8 percent

All crime is likely up due to “restorative justice”. It’s just harder to fudge the murder stat, obviously.

Most any city park at night: if the queers don’t get you, the muggers will. If more people carried, this problem would diminish greatly. Here in Atlanta, the campus of GA Tech is downtown. Students are constantly relieved of their phones, laptops, purses or wallets at gunpoint after dark. The perps are always the same. Nothing changes. The message that this behavior will not be tolerated has not been sent, therefore it will continue.

You think?! And deservedly so.

One of Mayor De Blasio's achievements.

I grew-up in the city. Parks were to be avoided especially at night. Too many places for thugs to hide and stalk their victims. Also too many hypodermic needles laying about.

I graduated from Columbia in 1961. The park is below a bluff known as Morningside Heights where the University buildings are located. The downside of the location is that Morningside Park is on the same level as Harlem. As such, thugs and gang members from the area have always been a problem in the park.

Columbia, from the 50s on has tried to be a good neighbor to this Harlem location and built recreation facilities for the neighborhood as well as run all sorts of programs to the residents, using the civic good will of Columbia students to go to the park and conduct the programs.

Nevertheless, almost 70 years of attempts to initiate and participate in good citizenship has not protected students who also use the park. They are often regarded as interlopers and/or prey.
