An 18-year-old Barnard freshman was fatally stabbed just after nightfall on Wednesday during a mugging in a park near the college’s Manhattan campus, the police and college officials said.
In a campuswide letter sent around 11 p.m., Sian Leah Beilock, Barnard’s president, identified the victim as Tessa Majors and said she had been killed in an armed robbery in Morningside Park.
“Tessa was just beginning her journey at Barnard and in life,” Ms. Beilock wrote. “We mourn this devastating murder of an extraordinary young woman and member of our community.”
Ms. Beilock said in the letter that she and Leslie Grinage, the dean of the college, had spoken with Ms. Majors’s parents, who were on their way to New York. She also urged “anyone in need” to take advantage of the college’s counseling services.
The official police account of the crime offered few details. About 5:30 p.m., officers with the New York Police Department responded to a report that a woman had been assaulted near West 116th Street and Morningside Drive, the police said.
When they arrived, the officers found an unconscious woman who had been stabbed multiple times. She was taken to Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, the police said.
No one had been arrested and the investigation was continuing early Thursday, the police said.

Ms. Johnson, a Columbia student, said she had participated in an effort to help clean up the park and improve its reputation as dangerous. She said Ms. Majors’s murder would affect students’ perception of the park.
“This is going to re-demonize the image,” she said.

City parks at night are dangerous. A walk in Morningside Park has always been considered to be a ticket to hell.

All crime is likely up due to “restorative justice”. It’s just harder to fudge the murder stat, obviously.
I just had a peak at her father’s twitter. Unsurprisingly, he is a rabid leftist.
Most any city park at night: if the queers don’t get you, the muggers will. If more people carried, this problem would diminish greatly. Here in Atlanta, the campus of GA Tech is downtown. Students are constantly relieved of their phones, laptops, purses or wallets at gunpoint after dark. The perps are always the same. Nothing changes. The message that this behavior will not be tolerated has not been sent, therefore it will continue.

I went to Tech. I lived over off Virginia Avenue. Many times I walked home, going through the Fifth Street tunnel and on from there. But never late at night. And this was in the late seventies. Then, most of the crime was south of North Avenue in the Techwood area.
Don’t you pull that crap to me. I have lived in NYC for nearly 40 years and I know how to conduct myself in the streets of that city. Intelligent women don’t go to the parks after dark. Nor do smart tourists, men or women. Anyone who doesn’t know that after darkness falls the ferals take over is an idiot.
I lived two blocks from where the Central Park jogger was taken down. I still don’t understand what the hell that young lady was doing in the park at that hour.
I had a number of people who taught me how not to be an easy target. From parents to the LEO who showed up at my college to teach women what and what not to do.
I listened.
BTW, NYS just passed something it euphemistically refers to as bail reform. It’s really a get-outta-jail-free card for accused perps. Including violent perps. NYS will be more dangerous after the first of the new year.
People, especially young ladies, should keep that in mind.
