Barbara Barham told The Washington Post on Monday that daughter Lauren Urey, 32, and husband Matthew Urey, 36, were on their honeymoon. Barham said the couple from Richmond, Virginia, had plans to visit a live volcano and werent concerned about possible eruptions.
Barham said she got a call sometime later from Royal Caribbean asking if shed heard from her daughter. Then Matthew Ureys mother called and relayed a distressing voicemail from her son. Matthew Ureys message said there had been a volcano eruption and they were burned very bad, Barham said.
Tourists had been exploring the moon-like surface of White Island, which is the tip of an undersea volcano. It erupted Monday with a towering blast of ash and scalding steam. At least five people were killed. Eighteen others were rescued. Eight others were missing and feared dead.

Yeah, but if they had been they would never have been able to make a call about being burned.

Bye Hon Love ya
Matthew was airlifted to a hospital in Christchurch for treatment of burns that cover about 80 per cent of his body, Barham said as she was preparing to fly out of Dulles International Airport on Monday night.
Matthew's mum is making arrangements to see her son by week's end, Barham said.

That is hard to wrap my mind around but you are probably correct.
Maybe not.
Burns can kill some time after the initial event.
The pain makes many people just give up.
80% body surface area burns. Not good. Rarely survivable.
It is a horrible way to go.
It doesn’t sound good, particularly for him, but her mother has heard from the hospital with an update.
my new husband and I drove to New England.....
“One day a bunch of tourists there may meet the same fate.”
When the Yellowstone has a super eruption, I would count it my lucky day to be a tourist there. Better than dying of starvation or a nuclear war after several years of severe hardships.
Right! Tourists in a several state area.
Hey, I have an idea for our honeymoon...lets visit an active volcano caldera,
I had a New Zealand volcano once.
Glad Mom has found them. I dont think his chances of survival are that great, or if he does survive, his life is going to be difficult, So prayers for them.
New England is lovely in the fall.
It will end up probably killing most everyone on the planet, so those closest will be the lucky ones.
you are assuming he was the person who made the “text”
don’t ya think under extreme circumstances you’d call, maybe this one time warrants it...?
Honey, let’s take out some life insurance first...
Hells bells, I wouldn’t even go near a dormant volcano.
In areas of weak cell coverage, a text is often all you can get to go through. I’ve dealt with that a lot out on the far northern OBX or up in the Blue Ridge. Texting is a way of life in those places. Any more remote and you’d be walking to a hilltop or driving several miles until you get at least a bar.
