With Tagging Season Over, Shark Researchers Begin Data Analysis (Cape Cod)

CHATHAM – The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy wrapped up their tagging season a few weeks ago, but researchers still have a lot of work ahead. The winter months bring with them plenty of work to be completed and data to be analyzed. “The winter is actually an incredibly important and productive time for us,” said Megan Winton, a staff scientist with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy. “Right now we are processing all the videos that we collected over the summer, we are analyzing tagging data that the Division of Marine Fisheries has been collecting over the past almost decade,” she said.

This past tagging season the Conservancy fitted 50 great whites in Cape Cod waters with tracking and data-logging devices and in June they began to conduct new research focused on getting a better understanding of the predatory behavior of white sharks in the region.snip..

“All of the tags that were put out by the Division of Marine Fisheries this summer, they have battery lives of ten years so we will be collecting information on those animals for the next decade,” said Winton.

“We feel that if we can better understand when where and how white sharks attack and kill seals we’ll be able to, perhaps, collect the kinds of information necessary to enhance public safety.”snip..

We are into December now and Cape Cod white shark tagging is a thing of the past.

This article is a wrap up on the tagging season.

Hope Freepers enjoyed the discussions we have had during the season.

The shark problem on Cape Cod will not be going away and will restart in June 2020.- Tom

First step in data analysis: Compile list and locations of arms lost while tagging.

There’s so much we can learn from Great White Sharks.

Not much to learn from Mediocre White Sharks, though.

“Here, we can see that Wednesday, the shark was swimming around looking for something to eat.

On Thursday, this shark was swimming around looking for something to eat.

But, on Friday, he was in the lab working on a cure for excessive phlegm.”

Steve the seal has a differing opinion.

“Kill those bastards! Kill them and then kill them again! Kill them in the morning! Kill them at night! Kill them when a commercial comes on the tv! In case I haven’t made myself clear, kill every lousy rotten one of them!”

You want your shark to be four feet and under. The meat just isn't that good on the bigger ones.
It's best to BBQ them right after you land them.

We sure ate a lot of them at Ora Wan Beach.

Tag the little sharks as “Tasty.”

A way to feed the sharks while getting rid of Leftists:

Tell Antifa that Cape Cod has Great White Supremacist sharks that need to be protested against.

Bring bathing suits, swimming trunks and hot sauce.

First step in data analysis: Compile list and locations of arms lost while tagging.

They have had a good safety record of tagging sharks.
One of he contributing factors is the cost of the tags encourages you to make a good shot while tagging, and not lose the tag. -Tom

Which sharks do you like best? Years ago, a local pub had some very tasty shark appetizers on the menu but probably dropped it due to the anti-everything nazis.

What was your method of cooking and what is the time line for skinning, eating?

I believe that we just cut out long slabs of the meat and smoked it with fruit piled on top of it. I like to rent little boats from special services and some of the guys who rode along would troll. I believe that they had maybe eight boats.

Most times I just went snorkeling and when food was ready some guys would be sent up and down the beach to holler at anyone who wanted some.

This was from ‘81 to ‘84.

From the article-At the end of the month, researchers will once again hit the waters to retrieve receivers that track sharks in the water. Through this research, crews will be able to tell how many sharks stuck around Cape Cod waters into November and December.
Once the receivers have been hauled and the data analyzed, the Conservancy will update when the last tagged shark was in the area.

Tom here-Remember these hydrophone buoys only record pings from tagged sharks. It appears there are many more untagged sharks out there. -Tom

In the case of a mako, I usually let the steaks age a least two days , in the refrigerator, so the steak will relax and taste better. -Tom

Hmmm.
I don’t think any of the squadbays had a refrigerator.
We kinda had to make our fun when we had liberty, which wasn’t necessarily even once a month.

We were often deployed and the whole thing when Taiwan was testing its nuclear arsenal and mainland China got pissed happened then.

Plus the battalion commander was a douche.
