Robert Norris, known as the original 'Marlboro Man' used in ads for the cigarette brand, has died at age 90.
Norris passed away at his ranch in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on Sunday. He is survived by his two sons and two daughters, 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
For 12 years, Norris graced billboards and magazines as the Marlboro Man, a rugged man wearing a cowboy hat in wild terrain - with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth or in his hand.
But despite him pictured holding cigarettes for more than a decade, Norris never smoked and he eventually quit the ad campaign when he felt he wasn't setting a good example for his children.

That’s why he lived to 90!
I remember these posters back in the early 60’s displayed in the doctors office. It was the time cigarettes were deemed harmful to smokers. Instead of Marlboro the name was changed to ‘Marble Row’ with tombstones in the background.
You’ve got a lot to like in a Marlboro,
Filter, flavor, pack or box.
In moderation (1.5 packs per week), the Marlboro Red 72’s bring that full rich tobacco flavor, and I have been able to maintain that level of smoking. I don’t crave the nicotine to the extent that I’m smoking more and more all the time. I’m not saying that everybody should try it but if you do smoke, keep it to a minimum. Then, when you finally want quit for good it won’t be all that difficult.
Actually he started vaping mint flavor Juul 11 months ago.
Bump
I remember the Johnny Smoke commercials. It was an anti-smoking commercial taking aim at Marlborough.
Early 60s....I think cigarettes were about 27 cents a pack....same a gas.
Ah, that’s what finally killed him. (/s)
Likely the most wildly successful commercials ever.
“Early 60s....I think cigarettes were about 27 cents a pack....same a gas.”
Back in the 60’s when I worked for IBM we actually had cigarette machines on each floor, dispensing matches with the IBM logo. Small conference rooms allowed smoking. Smoke so thick you could hardly breathe.
...”I’d rather fight than switch.” :P
Major hunk, IMO.
Second hand Smoke killed the Marlboro Man
My late father was a regular smoker (my mom a social smoker) but when the Surgeon General’s report came out, he went to his doctor and asked how he could quit. There were no such thing as nicotine patches back then so the doc gave him a rubber ball and a pack of chewing gum. Whenever he felt the urge to smoke, he was to chew the gum and squeeze the ball. He must have looked silly behind his bank executive desk chewing gum and squeezing a ball like a schoolboy.
Fortunately, sugarless gum (Trident) was making its debut so he bought cases of gum and squeezed his ball until he no longer had any urge to smoke and finally quit altogether. It’s one of the things in his life I was most proud about.
Smoking didn’t kill him. His own Honda Accord did (different story). His sister, who smoked like a chimney and developed a wrinkly prune face from all the puffing, lived well into her 90s as did her non-smoking husband who must have breathed in a factory’s worth of second-hand smoke.
