The report by insurance provider Blue Cross Blue Shield says the diagnosis rate of MS in Central New York is 45 per 10,000 insured people or 1 in every 222.
Nationally, that number drops to just 1 in every 416 insured persons.
Dr. Corey McGraw with Upstate neurology says research has already shown MS is more common in people living farther away from the equator. The more north you live, the more likely you are to be diagnosed, he said.
Location is also what's sparked a deeper interest in a lack of Vitamin D and fighting off flu viruses.
The fact that Syracuse had a higher rate than even our surrounding communities is puzzling, and we don't know why that is, Dr. McGraw said.

vaccines?
My dad has MS didn’t show up until his late 40s. Been fairly stable since his mid 50s.
My readings at one point indicated there were pockets of MS where more cases were in the general population but that no cause could be determined for why.
Is there Any good explanation?
Could genetic background be a factor; are certain populations found in greater proportions in Syracuse than other communities?
Aren’t there many such factors to look at to try to determine why Syracuse is a major center of MS?
And because we are hard-wired to detect patterns - even when none may exist. (Which is why the ancients "saw" animals and people in the night sky).
Studies are showing correlations between the microbiota in the gut and autoimmune disease. I suspect genetics, diet and possibly other environmental factors.
US, UK, and Sweden have the highest rates. It might be genetically tied to norse populations in some way, but no known cause.
Here’s an interesting site with some of the ongoing ideas and geographic distributions:

Syracuse is north and especially cloudy in the winter.
[[Could genetic background be a factor;]]
Good guess- could be that it’s a high italian or english or whatever- maybe it’s a high somali area- thanks to obama-
Could be environmental too- I blame lack of fracking for high MS cases- but seriously- could even be soemthign transmitted by ticks which are high in NY- who kniows
The Bristol Myers Squib pilot pharmaceutical plant is in Syracuse.
General Electric waste.
Maybe a reaction to Orange dye.
No matter what anyone does, someplace will have the highest incidence of MS in the country.
Lived downwind of that stinky place for two years... UGH!
Lived here more than fifty years, worked for GE here, not aware of that. There was a big waste remediation project at the former Fisher Guide plant, and of course the biggest one of all is Onondaga lake and 100+ years of dumping by Solvay Process, which to this day gets barely-treated sewage pumped into it by the city and no one seems to think it's anything to get excited about.
On the other hand, I know a few things about North Carolina, and a strange, strange pond.
Why does one location have the highest rate of anything? Because somebody has to.
Here’s a better question. Why do publicity- and money-seeking crusaders always use pie charts? I’m not belittling the MS problem, I’m just ridiculing the method of getting attention.
Exactly. In any random dispersion you would find clusters. No reason need exist, beyond the nature of statistics. Never hurts to look though.
I got CIDP (chronic form of GB) a couple of weeks after my first (and last) flu vaccine shot. That was 20 years ago. Still have it.
Sounds interesting; care to share the details?
Read the article and then note that Canada has a very high MS rate; higher than any other country.
