My dad has MS didn’t show up until his late 40s. Been fairly stable since his mid 50s.

My readings at one point indicated there were pockets of MS where more cases were in the general population but that no cause could be determined for why.

Is there Any good explanation?

Could genetic background be a factor; are certain populations found in greater proportions in Syracuse than other communities?

Aren’t there many such factors to look at to try to determine why Syracuse is a major center of MS?

Because you wouldn't expect every malady to be evenly distributed throughout the nation.

And because we are hard-wired to detect patterns - even when none may exist. (Which is why the ancients "saw" animals and people in the night sky).

Studies are showing correlations between the microbiota in the gut and autoimmune disease. I suspect genetics, diet and possibly other environmental factors.

I believe sunlight and vitamin D does play a role.

Syracuse is north and especially cloudy in the winter.

No matter what anyone does, someplace will have the highest incidence of MS in the country.

Why does one location have the highest rate of anything? Because somebody has to.

Here’s a better question. Why do publicity- and money-seeking crusaders always use pie charts? I’m not belittling the MS problem, I’m just ridiculing the method of getting attention.

Read the article and then note that Canada has a very high MS rate; higher than any other country.

I wonder how much endogamy was practiced in Syracuse a couple of generations ago?

In addition to Ithaca’s higher latitude, the recent trends toward less dairy, low-fat foods, and greater use of sunscreens and avoidance of sun all make for lower Vitamin D levels.

Really? Of course genetics has something to do with it.

Family here in town. Sisters married brothers. All kids died from MS. And there were 5. One brother not affected. I thought it was a fact that genetics contributed, or was the cause of MS?
