The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases plans to deliberately infect as many as 80 people with the flu virus as part of a new series of trials aimed at studying how the disease progresses and finding ways to control it.
The agency said its scientists would conduct the trials on healthy adults between 18 and 50 years old at four different facilities in Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina and Ohio. Each volunteer is expected to receive up to $3,300 as compensation, the institute told CNN.
Participants will be given a nasal sprain containing a strain of the influenza A virus, or H1N1, that was developed by the institute and reliably produces mild to moderate influenza disease in most recipients, according to a news release.
The volunteers will remain in a clinic for at least seven full days after theyre infected with the virus and will have several follow-up visits for about three months after the trial. Scientists will take their blood samples and nasal and throat swabs before, during and after the trial to trace how their immune systems respond.

I was offered a free endoscopy and 1500 bucks to try a new GERD medication.
I didn’t feel like travelling to brooklyn from Staten Island for the 6 to 8 visits :)
$3,300 is not enough. Can you imagine the types of people who would look at that as a “great deal”? I’m guessing homeless people, single women with no kids, a few college students deep in debt, etc.
I’m too old.
I’m down with this. I volunteer Hillary.
Hmmmm getting the flu via spray is bad enough but having to recover in a designated facility presents a 2nd set of lovely side effect possibilities.
I’m not sure I can even catch the flu.
I’ve never had a flu shot, and I’ve never caught the flu either.
I also eat food I accidentally drop on the floor past the 10 second rule.
Me, too! LOL
Bummer. I live in Maryland and couple use a few days off but I’m over 50
I think I just got it for free. Crap
Me, too. I feel like I've been run over by a truck.
I got the flu 8 years ago and have not gotten it since, but I remember it was hell.
I’ll pass.
56,000 people die each year from the flu.
It’s almost a given that some will die from this series of trials.
Oh well. That $3,300 will cover burial expenses. No wait. It won’t even cover HALF.
Please. liberals, sign up for this ASAP, before they figure out it actually kills people...
Well, that’s what green blooded, pointy eared Vulcans always say....
I volunteer ILLary for a dose of malaria.
just get vaccinated,same result
This is how zombie apocalypses start.
Its almost a given that some will die from this series of trials.
56,000 deaths out of about 30,000,000 catching it (average of estimates I saw on the web) = 1 death per 535 victims. Not exactly a given that some will die of 80 participants, especially since they will be under constant medical supervision for a week.
