Men get the hair on their heads trimmed, wear fashionable clothes, take baths or showers, put on deodorant, get their teeth whitened. That’s all cosmetic.
Putting on makeup says only one thing to me: they want to look feminine.

A lot of the reasons for the hairstyles of that day was the prevalence of lice. They mostly shaved their hair and wore a wig.

At least back then, the man in the powder wig would dual if you insulted them, and in the 80s the glam and punk rock guys could throw down if it came to it, and they were 99.9% not playing for the other team, and were mostly just hamming it up on-stage with the makeup.
Today we are dealing with a whole different freak show.
