Why is Windows 10 a mess? Ex-Microsoft engineer blames the culture of 'made-men'.

Windows 10 could be better if only Microsoft got rid of its layers of made-men, according to a former Microsoft distinguished engineer.

Tired of boring, buggy Windows 10 updates? You can blame them on Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's failure to eliminate the company's legacy of appointing "made-men".

“I thought Classic Shell updates to remain compatible with Win 10 updates were discontinued due to the frequency and complexity of Win 10 changes. Is that still true? Is Classic Shell compatible with recent Win 10 versions?”

I’m running Classic Shell right now on the lasted Windows update and it works fine.

“But it will probably void the warranty if you have one.”

I have never heard of that happening.

“Making a portable external high capacity USB linux drive to boot from will not. :)”

For all intents and purposes, both are the same and interact with the existing PC hardware (in both cases the installed Windows system is ignored and by passed - it’s just a matter of an inboard or outboard disk.

I think if a person has some kind of service arrangement where somebody else handles everything PC-wise, warranty could be a concern. But then again, if a person isn’t into basic popping-open-the-hood monkeying around of a generic sort, he’s probably not going to be wandering from MS or whatever system in the first place.

Y’know you can even run many Linux varieties from a USB stick, e.g. 16GB. Is a bit more sluggish than using a regular onboard disk, but comes in handy every now and then to just pop into a PC and run.

Win 10 is saddled with the failed tile UI. If they got rid of that, fixed the bugs, and took out the spyware it might be worth a look. As it is, I use it to only run software that clients need me to run under windows. Other than that, I am Mint Man.

You are giving it to the IRS. How private do you think it is?

Yeah, when MS thought it was a good idea to imitate iPhone and go with a load of annoying and useless icons/apps. MS fixes stuff that isn’t broken, that’s always been it’s biggest problem.

On Mint - I have it installed on one PC, but the thing I’ve always been curious about is the software-system update. I have no idea what Mint considers a “safe setting” - that is, won’t install updates that might break the OS.

With other Linux distros a distinction is made so you can easily choose what’s safe. Mint uses “levels” which isn’t as exact or intuitive for my use, at least. That’s the reason I don’t set newbies up with it - the update level settings aren’t very helpful.

Microsoft seems to have a tie-in with some of our auto manufacturers in that each years “new & improved” is worse or way worse than what they had before.

You can turn that off...

Are you certain of that? I am trying to decide between Win 10 or going with Linux (for Internet access) for my Win 7 Pro PC and laptop. I use the cloud for nothing by choice (there are exceptions I could live with, like a cloud DVR). I would like it to remain that way.

W10 is a stinking pile of C. On a Desktop it acts like a tablet. On a tablet it acts like a Desktop. All like that out of the box. You have to use UNAPPROVED 3rd party apps to tame it -so you can’t use them. I have to support it from a server-side. It’s a piece of junk! Always confounding our customers, always bloat-grading itself into higher echelons of useless Craptastictness.

Yep, I have made 64 gig sticks with persistent storage. But an external drive has faster transfer back and forth than a stick does. Especially through USB 3.0. My external SSD drive is actually faster through the USB port than my internal platter HDD. It is almost as fast as an internal SSD.

Is that cool stuff or what? I have been on Mint Cinnamon for two years now without one glitch. There isn’t one program for windows I have not been able to replace with linuxware yet. I can run everything old and new Linux, MS ware, MAC ware, and even Android phone apps with the Linux. Ease of use, “Peace of mind”, and stability is worth a whole lot.

“But... but... the folders are generic looking and not as pretty!” So... Then customize them with new icons because you can customize every detail in Linux just like you can in a website script. I’m digging it. :)

I can’t find a way to disable the trackpad when a mouse is plugged in.

Click on the start key
Click on Settings
Click on Devices
Click on Touchpad
Go to Related Settings
Click on Additional Settings
Check box with this dialog: "Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached."

That will turn off your trackpad.

“I have made 64 gig sticks with persistent storage.”

I’d like to do that with Puppy Linux on a stick as it natively can only handle 4 gigs of persistent storage. You can have more persistence on Puppy but doing so is too complex for me. (Not really, I’m just lazy, heh)

Gotta love the external HDs, I get the 2.5” drives and put in a USB case. In addition to putting an OS on one, the storage is also great just as it is and it’s such a convenient way to carry a boat load of movies around.

What program(s) do you use to install a Linux OS on a stick? There are several good ones.

Try Linux Mint....my laptop is at least 5 plus years old and has been running Mint all week, 24/7 with at least 20 Tabs open.

Freeper Openurmind helped me install Linux Mint Cinnamon on my HP laptop when Windows 10 went psychotic on me some weeks ago.

It's an excellent OS, but for whatever reason, it freezes on my computer after about an hour's use. We've gotta get back in there and debug that little issue.

I’m curious about Classic Shell. Does it just give your computer the appearance of a Windows 7 desktop, or does it do other things too, like get rid of those ugly metrosexual tiles?

Oh man, now you went and messed up YOUR good reputation by admitting you know me... I was saving you from that embarrassment on the board. lol :)

And yes we do need to do that when you feel up to it. Did you get your new one back yet? I figured out how we can do this without voiding your warranty. That is what I wanted to thank you for, your situation with that new one made me go work on the external drive project as to not need to make any internal changes. And it can be swapped from any computer to any computer as needed. Did you read above about that? :)
