Chili Man Arrested in Road Rage Incident that Ended in Wegmans Parking Lot

Gates police have charged a Chili man with attempted murder in a road rage incident that turned into a fight, leaving a Gates man with serious stab wounds to the neck and leg.

Officers said Levar Merritt, 42, is charged with second-degree attempted murder, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, and first-degree assault.

He was arraigned and sent to the Monroe County Jail on $45,000 cash bail or $80,000 bond.

Police said the alleged incident ended in the parking lot of the Lyell Avenue Wegmans, but started on the road between him and the 39-year-old victim.

"One gentleman pulled out a box cutter and stabbed the other motorist multiple times," said Gates Police Chief James VanBrederode.

Merritt surrendered to police already at the store.

Police say the victim is in guarded condition at an area hospital.

"By all means, do not get out and confront the individual, you don't know if they're armed as we saw yesterday, or what they're capable of doing," VanBrederode said.

This isn’t the first time Merritt has been involved in a confrontation like this. Gates police said this road rage incident is nearly a repeat of a similar one on June 20 at the Gates Wegmans.

I will add to the thread title next time. I believe I entered it into the topic field. Hopefully mods won’t pull thread for adding on stuff in the title field.

I think it’s pronounced “chie-lie”, recalling when I lived in that area.

If you do it in parentheses as I suggested, that has generally been accepted, perhaps even encouraged, by the mods.

Surprised at the Topics issue. That generally works.

Chili is a town in the Rochester area.......

However, the comment about Wegman’s is spot on.

Fifty years ago I was in the Gates-Chili Volunteer Fire Company (Company 1); a great outfit, very professional in character. As you know, Gates borders Chili on the north, and both lie on the limits of the City of Rochester to the east of them. They all share West Avenue.

Greetings from Delaware, MITUSA, from a former Western New Yorker!

Wegmans is awesome, except for the prices.

Depends some on what you're looking for.

For many of the basics and food staples, their everyday prices are very good.

Their club pack of boneless chicken breast is ALWAYS $1.99/lb.

Their carry out and prepared foods, which are terrific quality BTW, are their money makers, but so what? Let people who couldn't be bothered cooking pay for it.

That's the way I've always heard it pronounced.

My son lived in the area when he went to college there.

In “The Great French Duel”, as a second, Mark Twain suggested Gatling guns, failing that, axes, to his French counterpart.

They settled on pistols, which the French second conveniently carried clipped to his watch chain.

Twain concluded the greatest danger to a French duel was the posibility one might catch a cold in the morning air.

The problem is, the mods don’t like messing with the original title.

It messes up search for people who are trying to avoid posts.

And how well search works is another issue entirely. I use duckduckgo or google to search for threads on FR. It works better than FR’s search engine.

Interesting local history...sounds like a nice place to visit. Not to mention, by the last census, it’s 91.14% white. How’d they get away with that?

(I was kidding about Chili. I’m just genetically prone to errant words keying thoughts of food. Heck, Hispanic workers are working at the house across the street...and everyday, after listening to them, I have this desire to eat at a Mexican restaurant. I’m serious.)

Wegman's is going to take Delaware by storm: it is going to open its first Eden-like branch in the old Barley Mill plaza right by me, as announced in yesterday's News Journal.

The atmosphere of most groceries around Wilmington have the atmosphere resembling a war zone, with similar attitude toward shoppers. I believe Wegman's is going to crush them, including the recent itty-bitty Aldi's that is only a year or so old.

“Their carry out and prepared foods...”

You have to pay attention to the various methods they offer their prepared foods. There can be a big difference in the “per pound” prices whether from the prepackaged prepared food cooler, the deli across the aisle and the mega food bar. The same food can be at two or more of the displays...at different per pound prices. Why pay $10/pound for slaw at the salad bar when you can get it for $3-4 at the deli? A little “comparison” shopping can save big bucks. But it’s worth it.

that’s pretty funny. I do to.

There is an article posted right her on FR back about ten years ago that was a life changer for me. When I search on FR, even “archives”, it no longer shows up. But when I search the title with the word “freerepublic” in bing or Google, I’m taken right to it.
