There are two reasons, according to Jim Adovasio, we dont think of baskets or textiles when we think of the Stone Age. One is that stones and bones, being far more durable, are far more common at archeological sites than artifacts made of fiber... And yet it has been around a long time, as four small pieces of clay described by Adovasio this past year make clear. Found at a site called Pavlov in the Czech Republic, they are 27,000 years old--and impressed with patterns that could only have been created by woven fibers. These artifacts push back the date of the earliest known weaving by 10,000 years...
High-resolution photographs revealed at least two types of weave. Adovasio thinks the impressions represent finely woven baskets, bags, or mats--he cant say how flexible the fabric was--which could have been made of milkweed, nettle, or the fibrous bark of alder or yew. How the weave was impressed on the clay fragments is uncertain; the Pavlov people may have used baskets as molds for clay pots, or they may simply have trodden on mats laid on moist clay floors. In any case, says Adovasio, the regularity and narrow gauge of the weaving demonstrate that the technology wasnt new even 27,000 years ago.

I suspect there were a great many wonderful items of art, trade and architecture created in ‘pre-ancient’ cultures which have been lost posterity due to them having been fabricated from perishable materials.
Yup. The over-the-top response of course is that it’s all about sexism / white male privilege — a grossly racist, sexist, and anti-intellectual response.
Wholeheartedly agree. If only they had not made their pre-ancient iPhones out of twigs and bark.
;-)
They pioneered text messaging using their Blackberries — alas, they were actual blackberries.
It is not uncommon for potters to use woven matting or fabric to make decorative impressions on moist clay jars before drying them out and firing them. Sometimes they form a coiled or slab pot in a basket, sometimes they wrap a wooden paddle with a scrap of textile.
I like these threads. Humor is accepted, in fact encouraged.
Just try and make a joke on one of the religious threads.... You are immediately thrown on the scale with a duck as counter balance.
Thought sure this was thread about the 2020 democrats.
Because each of them are basket cases going to hell in a hand basket if ever I saw one.
LOL
Or even to use some sort of existing pottery or wooden template to simulate the look of a woven basket — kinda like that moment in the original “Planet of the Apes” where Taylor asks, “would an ape make a human doll that talks?”
I’ve always thought that was a catchy tune.
Everything is being found to be older than original expected/accepted.
Yeah, I notice that when I get out of bed in the morning. ;^)
