SEATTLE -- They say misery loves company. But for the Seattle Mariners, misery is theirs alone.
You might pardon Seattleites for rooting for the St. Louis Cardinals in their futile attempt to reach the World Series this year. Not because we're fans of Paul Goldschmidt or Yadier Molina, but because they were our last hope to keep the hometown Mariners from a rather dubious distinction.
But the hopes died when the Washington Nationals completed their sweep of the Cardinals in the NLCS Tuesday night.
The Nationals are World Series bound for the first time in their franchise history, and the Mariners have lost their final partner in futility.
The Seattle Mariners are now the only team never to make the World Series.
They've come somewhat close three times -- reaching the American League Championship Series in 1995, 2000 and 2001, but falling in six games twice and five games the other time, so they've never even been as close as a game away.
But to reach the World Series, you have to qualify for the playoffs first -- and that hasn't happened for team since that record-breaking 2001 season where they won 116 games. The 18-year playoff drought is currently the longest in professional sports and one year ahead of NFL's Cleveland Browns, which could have an outside chance to end their streak this season.

As a Patriots fan I had to wait 40 years for their first championship.
GO HAWKS!!!!
“As a Patriots fan “
An embarrassment of riches... shaddup you!
As a Wash a tonian, the Mariners suck and blow simultaneously. If this team were a woman, men would swear off sex for life.
LOL Too true! They had a theme a while back that went “Ya Gotta Love These Guys” ... Really? Why?
In the NFL, the Detroit Lions are the oldest team to have yet to appear in a Super Bowl, and their last championship was in 1957 (with previous ones in 1935, 1952, and 1953).
This mantle was inherited from the Chicago/St. Louis/Phoenix/Arizona Cardinals franchise whose losing appearance in Super Bowl XLIII in February 2009 against the Pittsburgh Steelers marked that franchise’s first Super Bowl appearance ever (and first championship final appearance since 1948) and bid for first a championship overall since 1947.
I was at that game. It was great. Of course, this was when they had a team.
I have been a Mariner's fan for years, went thru the ups and (mostly) downs. Went thru the rotating players every year; then they switchhed it up and had rotating managers for a while.
This past season they basically replaced everyone but 2 players (Seager and the 1st baseman, whose name I can't remember). I don't know anyone on that team anymore. And, they are terrible, pretty much like every other Mariner team since Lou Pinella left for Tampa Bay (his elderly mother was ill and lived in Florida).
So, T-Mobile took over and now there are pink highlights all over the stadium. And the prices they charge for their concessions is outrageous.
Hey, it gives me someone to root for this year. I have completely given up on the Mariners. So, I decided that I would root for the Astros duing the play-offs. One factor in my decision was that I knew the players and their names on the Astros team; and, I couldn't say the same for my home team, the Mariners. So, tired of them just replacing everyone and thinking good things will happen.
Buckeye,
The Rays play in a location near downtown Saint Pete.
the location was a homer deal done by corrupt politicians.
Built on a hazmat dump area that took extra millions to clean up.
Had they built it north of the city near the dog track and a decent stadium folks from tampa and cleatwater would have come as freeways merge there.
Then they built the absolutely worst stadium EVER.
Hard to believe but Tampa is a football town, Bad as the Bucks are.
The Oakland A’s might move to Vegas first. Their AAA team is the Las Vegas Aviators and the Oakland Mayor and City Council seem to want them to move. The Oakland Coliseum is the worst stadium in MLB.
“108 years between appearances in the World series”? 108? Wrong.
Agreed with Bobby. The Cubs last appeared (before 2016 against Cleveland) in a World Series in 1945 in a seven game loss to the Detroit Tigers.
From their last championship in 1908 (also against Detroit) to 1945, the Cubs went to World Series in 1910, 1918 (Boston’s last World Series victory until 2004), 1929 (against Philadelphia Athletics who were also the Cubs’ opponent in 1910), 1932 (against the NY Yankees), 1935 (Detroit), and 1938 (also against the New York Yankees and the 1938 series is the earliest known World Series to have colour film footage of it).
They kind of have you - you might not pay ten buckadingdongs for a beer anywhere else, but there you pay it to kill the pain.
Does Lola know Dave Martinez the current Nats manager?
The Great Choke of 2001 highlighted a glaring flaw that has plagued the Mariners since their inception. No matter how much talent they may have on their roster, their culture will always defeat them.
In short, throughout their pathetic history the Mariners leadership has known only how to lose and has learned nothing of how to win.
And nobody knows better how to take a dive after the All-Star break than the Seattle Mariners.
The Mariners will never get to the World Series, much less win one.
They should change the team's name to the Wallflowers, because no matter how close they may get to the ball, they will never dance with the prince.
Close. The Mariners won 116 that season, not 113. It was an incredible choke job though, no doubt about it.
No, but I do, he was XO under Kevin Cash last year for the Rays, and it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy, though I wish it had happened to the Rays as well.
I remember flying into Chicago once (before 2016) and the pilot announced, Welcome to Chicago, home of the Cubs, winners of the 1908 World Series ...
Seattle is a city of losers
