Russia has stationed troops between the Syrian army and Turkish forces in an attempt to prevent fresh clashes in northern Syria.

Moscow said its soldiers are now patrolling land outside the flashpoint city of Manbij, which was taken over by Syrian government forces on Tuesday, to prevent an anticipated Turkish attack.

Russia, which backs the Syrian government, said 'no one is interested' in fighting between Syrian government troops and Turkish forces and that Moscow 'is not going to allow it.'

I must admit the macabre side of me was looking forward to seeing Syrian and Turkish regulars go at it.

after Obama, Clinton and McCain’s failed and pathetic attempt to use Al Qaeda to overthrow Assad, Russia seems to be the only rational and ethical actor in the whole scenario.

It would not be a contest. Turks are much better trained and equipped.

ditto

But if either wants to mix it up with the Russians, that’s okay too.

No NATO protection for Turkish aggression.

IF the US finds it necessary to support a faction in this mess, we should come down clearly on the side of Russia and Syria.

It would be in our best interests, and arguably the moral choice.

Most of the actual fighters are Syrian rebels supported by Turkey. They might have a tough time against Syrian tanks backed up by Syrian air power with Russian assistance.

Putin doesn't need to stop Turkish troops in the field, he can just call Erdogan and tell him what to do.

“I must admit the macabre side of me was looking forward to seeing Syrian and Turkish regulars go at it.”
*******************************************
I certainly don’t want us to get involved. And the most important part of said non-involvement is that we will not get involved in sparing or shielding Turkey from the adverse consequences of their unprovoked invasion of a neighboring country.

My personal belief is that Turkey well deserves whatever adversity comes from THEIR actions. They have a long history of supporting and working with ISIS and other Islamist criminals that murdered and enslaved religious minorities. The Syrians on the other hand have a record of protecting Christian and other religious/ethnic minorities. And a significant portion of the Syrian military forces are actually Christian.

So while we don’t have a dog in that fight, I know which dog I’m rooting for...and it’s not the ISIS supporters.

We didn't learn from Russia's decade-long occupation of Afthanistan, and apparently neither did Russia.

But Trump did...

Certainly an interesting subject to contemplate. On paper, the Turks certainly have the advantage but, the Syrians have advantages also. They would be defending they own soil while the Turks would be invaders with supply lines to protect. While the Turks have a better air force, the Syrian have a decent air defense system. The Syrian army is battle hardened while the Turkish army has undergone political purges in the leadership ranks. In a short conflict the advantage would be with the Turks, but in a protracted war, the Syrians would have an even or better chance. A wild card would be the Kurds who all of our military experts now seem to consider the best and most noble fighters in history.

It might come down to whether the Turkish army would be more motivated to invade a neighboring country or to get rid of President Erdoğan.
