FORT WORTH — Minutes before she was shot and killed by a Fort Worth police officer, Atatiana K. Jefferson was playing video games in her bedroom with her 8-year-old nephew, a lawyer for her family said Sunday.

Ms. Jefferson, 28, was proud of being the “cool auntie” to her siblings’ children, and had stayed up into the wee hours of Saturday morning with her nephew, Xbox controllers in their hands, according to S. Lee Merritt, the family’s lawyer. But the pair grew concerned around 2:25 a.m., he said, when they heard rustling outside the house and saw flashlights.

Those who wish to blame video games for violence now have their case.

But if may not be like they suggest.

Blame the busybody neighbor who called the insta-shooters aka cops.

Perhaps the cop played too many video games and could not separate the games from his real life.

Was she playing video games when she was shot, or was she outside the house at 0230?

She was inside her home.

The cop shot through a window.

I have read a few articles on this and it is sad and tragic. The officer that shot the lady needs to pay. The family needs to be compensated. Training needs to be done. This was uncalled for. They could have knocked on the door...announced their presence...a whole myriad of things they could have done and this Auntie would still be alive. I know the NYT is painting a story here...but in the end, this was an uncalled for shooting.

I remember that video of the police shooting a guy in a hotel lobby. They yelled out conflicting commands...and then shot him. His crime? He had purchased a new bb gun and was showing it to his girlfriend in the room. Someone had seen the barrel of the gun from outside and called the cops. Of course it was a good shoot. I imagine this one too, will be labelled as such...as the officer no doubt feared for their life...

The cop should be in jail, not administrative leave.

If a homeowner shoots through a window and kills someone outside of the house, it is a murder. The cop merely shot in the reverse direction. The cop murdered that woman.

I have a brother in law on the Fort Worth Police Department.
He has convinced himself that everyone in some parts of town is part of the drug trade. He’s scraped through several internal affairs investigations, and eventually his friends won’t be able to cover his ass when he screws up.

This isn’t the one officer. This is a behavior widespread in this particular police department.

Cop never came to the door, never announced he was police, yelled “Show me your hands!” and shot her dead before he had even finished his sentence. It’s all on the cam. Straight-out murder on the part of the officer.

The guy only got 10 years? Didn't this recently happen?

I don’t blame him. I actually feel sorry for him. He was concerned about his neighbor, a noble thing. He couldn’t have known that the cops would show up shooting.

Side story: Many years ago, I went over to deliver some tomatoes to an older neighbor. Well, her front door was wide open. That was very unusual. I rang the front door bell. No response. I yelled her name. No response. Then she finally appeared. She was in her basement.

That happened around noon. If it was after dark, I would have called the ambulance folks (a cop would have responded too). What other choice was there?

There is a framegrab from the officer’s bodycam just before the shot. It was at point blank range, maybe 2 feet. His gun was about a foot from the window and she was at the window, looking out. I imagine both shooter and victim were startled, but there is no excuse for the shooting.

Unfortunately, the cops entered the backyard with the mindset that they were in the midst of a violent crime. In that mindset, the officer was bound to shoot the first person he saw. Amber Guyger had that same mindset when she entered the wrong apartment and shot Botham Jean.

This incident just happened yesterday. It was the Dallas cop, Amber Guyger, that only got 10 years for shooting a man in his own home. Different story.

Cops should not be shooting people through windows without knowing what’s going on.

“Needs to be compensated”

Problem there, it is extracted from the taxpayers, who, it should be pointed out, did not shoot this lady. What good does that do? Nothing, that’s what.
