Christianity and Yoga: Is it Really Okay?
Urban Faith ^ | Sherrell Moore-Tucker

Did you know that our beloved country has a history of repurposing and repackaging things that we didn’t necessarily discover? Take our beloved Christmas tree for example. Did you know that decorating trees and giving money was a part of worship to various gods during Egyptian times? It is also part of the Germanic pagan solstice tradition.

The exchange of wedding rings did not originate in the church, and various religions worship and practice meditation, prayer, and fasting just like Christians. So should I take my ring off based on the original intent, or stop purchasing Christmas trees and decorations because the Egyptians utilized the tree first? No, I don’t, because I serve a God who can redeem anything, as He is the Creator of all.

The Bible speaks specifically about key elements used in most forms of yoga: meditation, breathing, and movement. For me, Acts 17:18 sums it up: “For in Him we live and move and exist.” So I will put truth up against philosophy any day, as philosophy is simply man’s attempt to understand God, His creations, and purpose. Joshua 1:8 reminds me to meditate on His Word day and night; Genesis 2:7 defines the source of my life: “He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person”; and numerous Scriptures speak of our bodily posture toward God. King David had a keen understanding that our outward posture is reflective of what’s going on inside, because God, the originator of the mind-body connection, knows that the way we move can positively or negatively affect the heart and mind...

My wife only wears yoga pants to and from the studio

She rarely wears them around the home either...

We have three teen and almost teen boys and a lot of their pals around for sleepovers etc sometimes 8-9 15-17 year olds piled upstairs in every room

And she’s modest...
She hides her huge sweater puppies too so they aren’t bouncing around like a tilt a whirl

About a year ago my oldest son needed some Cope

He begged her and as usual she gives in and drives to the local gas and food market where 30-50 construction workers and yard cutters get lunch and she had to walk a gauntlet of stares and whistles

She came home satisfied her instincts had been correct and will never do that again

Yoga profoundly lifted her caboose

After 25 years of it that is

My only warning is it does attract some liberal women...and you have to be aware it’s not a conservative environment like say Free a Will Baptist Sunday school would be or church of God Sunday school

Even in Christian yoga where they go out of their way to incorporate verse into the usual yoga prose

“What is the thought process when doing the yoga?”

That’s totally dependent upon the derriere of the girl in the row in front of me.

As a type of stretching and physical balance exercises, there is nothing wrong with a Christian using them. For those purposes, they are excellent. Any of the spirituality associated with yoga is Hindu in origin and thus, incompatible with Christianity and should be avoided by all Christians.

If a yoga class attempts to add meditation or chanting to the physical exercises, a Christian should leave.

Former Kundalini Yoga Teacher Turns to Christianity - Part 1/8

There are just as many YouTube videos of former dark ages Christians like you turning to a more mystical form of Christianity. A more holistic view, over and above your amalgamation of Dark ages superstitions, Catholic Church dogmas and Roman Paganism that you call Christianity. Hey friend guess what you are a Pagan and you didn't even know it.

Read your Church history and other third party sources and not take your bastardized King James or NIV Bible as words right from your creator and as absolute truth. I think saying the Bible is 100% true because it says is 100% true is a substitute for thinking Cherry picked stories canonized by 6th century men who thought bloodletting and saying Bless you after a sneeze were real things.

“Not true. Yoga is Hindu and involves emptying yourself to awaken the serpent spirit in you called Kundalini. Demonic possession”

Oh, please, those nitwit women going to yoga class are not practicing anything.

Please show me where meditation is anti-Biblical! I can provide at least 20 Bible verses where we're encouraged to meditate. None of them say that it's against Biblical law to meditate while doing exercise.

I doubt that you’ll find a prohibition of fast food in Christ’s teachings.

Christians should not...watch scary movies, listen to music with the mention of fairies or goblins. Eat sugar which could cause gluttony. Talk with other faiths or cultures not in an evangelical context as they may become demon possessed or polluted with non-Godly ideas. Never read text books which contradict the 6000 year old earth theory. Never love anyone of another faith as you may become un-equally yoked. Basically become a FREAKING Pharisees . See how stupid all the rules and dogmas are.

What should basically do is stand in a corner, muttering scripture into your shoe tops while saluting the flag, anything else is un-Godly and dangerous to your salvation. Now head off to Bible study where you can gossip and bask in the your knowledge you are not going to that fiery place all those dirty towel and dot heads are going.

Suppose I said I worshipped Shiva. So what? What’s wrong with that? Last I checked we had a little thing called religious freedom.

>>>It’s probably a rhetorical question, but the answer is definitely H*** No.

That is kind of interesting given your screen name is that of a known yoga devotee.

Or you can just skip yoga classes and take ballet barre or Pilates classes instead for strength and flexibility instead.

So do you know of a yoga class like that? I doubt it. The meditation and chanting in a yoga class is far, far more likely to be based on a Hindu belief system. A Christian should avoid such a belief system.

My whole point was that there is nothing wrong with the physical component of yoga but a Christian should not be associated with anything that introduces Hindu spirituality.

“Those people would mostly say what Occidentals do is NOT yoga.”

Yes, likely so. But it will still, and increasingly, be Yoga to those who do just the basic physical execises of Yoga, without feeling any religious signifcance to it.

We would say that the Japanese do not speak “English” when they do speak what is English to them. Just like Yoga now represents an umbrella of various different practices originating from a religious group 5,000 years ago, we now have many, usually, national versions of English as English, in general, grows in use across the globe. I forsee a future where English is the dominant language in the world, but linguists will call it English dialects - versions.

Change - that is the way of the world. It would be not normal if Yoga was the same practice everywhere. In terms of a practice, if Yoga could be compared to a language, you could say there are different dialects of Yoga.

Even Christianity is no different. There are some Catholics that believe only Catholicism is truly Christian, while some other Christians say Catholicism is clerical and just Catholicism, not exclusively Chriatianty.

I don’t know why some people think the only Yoga that anyone practices is that which some religious csste demanded of candidates for their priesthood 5,000 years ago, and without any chnage or variation since. Not logical.
