Christianity and Yoga: Is it Really Okay?
Urban Faith ^ | Sherrell Moore-Tucker

Did you know that our beloved country has a history of repurposing and repackaging things that we didn’t necessarily discover? Take our beloved Christmas tree for example. Did you know that decorating trees and giving money was a part of worship to various gods during Egyptian times? It is also part of the Germanic pagan solstice tradition.

The exchange of wedding rings did not originate in the church, and various religions worship and practice meditation, prayer, and fasting just like Christians. So should I take my ring off based on the original intent, or stop purchasing Christmas trees and decorations because the Egyptians utilized the tree first? No, I don’t, because I serve a God who can redeem anything, as He is the Creator of all.

The Bible speaks specifically about key elements used in most forms of yoga: meditation, breathing, and movement. For me, Acts 17:18 sums it up: “For in Him we live and move and exist.” So I will put truth up against philosophy any day, as philosophy is simply man’s attempt to understand God, His creations, and purpose. Joshua 1:8 reminds me to meditate on His Word day and night; Genesis 2:7 defines the source of my life: “He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person”; and numerous Scriptures speak of our bodily posture toward God. King David had a keen understanding that our outward posture is reflective of what’s going on inside, because God, the originator of the mind-body connection, knows that the way we move can positively or negatively affect the heart and mind...

:) I like making trouble. If we were in the backyard and you said “look at the crow”, I’d say “you’re wrong, it’s a raven”.

I have perfected this sort of entertainment to a high art form.

I taught yoga for years and I'm Catholic.
Yoga was only one of a zillion ways of worshiping the gods. The Hindus have some 330 million different gods. ANYthing can be God.

My husband was SURE that some Hindus were worshiping a '56 Chevy as "god." He might have been correct.
Some women made their husbands "god." Lol. That would go over big here...

I’m trying to incorporate eating fast food into Christianity. So far i’ve found nothing in the Bible to back it up.

For starters, Exodus 12:8-11

“Yoga is Hindu and involves emptying yourself to awaken the serpent spirit in you called Kundalini. “

No it isn’t, that got killed in one of the Harry Potter movies. (Which I guess is a whole new problem)

Of course I cannot show you a Bible verse about “yoga.” You are being ridiculous.

Over time the meaning words can change from their original meaning. Only orhodox believers of Hinduism worry about Yoga no longer meaning the same thing to everyone.

“Wow, are you a guru? Pundit? You present an emotional case for yoga”

Sounds like he or she is making an emotional case for sanity. A worthwhile, if often futile, endeavor.

Perhaps it would be helpful to explain the reason(s) for posting this.

Yoga is worship. It is the worship of (other) gods (devils, demons, evil spirits). Specifically, Hindu gods. As it is the worship of anything other than the Creator God, and His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, it is idolatrous.

Whom or what do you worship?

But in my defense, at least I DID know Harry Potter was problematic. I wouldn’t have survived Salem, and woulda been banned in Boston, and my writings would probably be on the Vatican index of forbidden books...and they sure as hell wouldn’t make it past the Texas Textbook Commission.

Exorcisms have increased 800 percent in the Western world for 1 primary reason: Yoga. Ask the Catholic Church. And I am not Roman Catholic

My rib is an erstwhile yoga instructor as well. Aside from some scripture between poses it’s about the exercise

And when she does hot yoga it’s pretty seriously hard

The exercise feeds her same as running does a runner or tennis a tennis woman

And all things neighbors relative it crates a very nice long muscle physique and a raised butt...No question about the latter

She was raised free will but has been southern baptist. Whole time I’ve known her....20 something years

But just to be safe...

If she agrees I may give her a personal “exorcism” later tonight or tomorrow morning after the kids go to school.....she’s a morning girl..

I bet a lot of yoga women are....yet another sign of the devil btw

“What is the thought process when doing the yoga?”

-darn my joints hurt
-Is my butt crack showing at the top of my yoga pants in this
pose?
-I really need to lose weight.
-why am I doing this?

Hindus believe that anything/anyone can be "God" as God is reflected in all things. Or so they believe. God can be an animal, vegetable or mineral or another person. Truly that is their belief.
It's no surprise that India has had such religious strife with the meeting of Hinduism, Islam (in the north) and Christianity in the south.

St. Thomas, the Apostle sometimes called the Doubter, evangelized southern India. Many Catholic boys in southern India are named "Thomas" after this Apostle who evangelized Southern India.

My husband and I worked for Saudi ARAMCO.
The Saudis would hire Muslims, Catholics and even an occasional Jew (if s/he was an American Jew) but only Indians who were Muslim or Catholic. NO Hindus because they were NOT People of the Book (Bible).

There was a Jewish American physical therapist over there, a woman. She was one of the VERY, VERY few female physical therapists in the Kingdom. Her being an American "trumped" her being a Jew.

The Saudis officially don't allow holy men from non-Muslim faiths into the Kingdom but they HAD to allow Christian ministers and priests into the Kingdom or Americans wouldn't go there. SO the Saudis decided to call those holy men "special teachers." No priests and ministers in the K.S.A., just many "special teachers."

I was a “night owl” from birth and never, even as a baby, wanted to go to bed before 11:00 P.M.
