The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is non-political respite, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
Soooooo....decided to grow it hydroponically this winter (NYS Zone 6).
Using Mason Jars per a great video I found. Also, considering Spinach.
I have some gladiolus bulbs I pulled out of the ground after blooming. Will they keep all winter? I live in Kansas.
Morning all! Garden is completely done now, seeds drying in brown bags, soon to be plucked and put on paper plates for cleaning and putting in envelopes. I like to use #10 envelopes cut in half, plenty of room to write and then close up with some tape. Tomato seeds get left on the paper towels they dried on. I cut away the excess and pull away the 2nd ply. Works great every year. Soon I will be finalizing at least in my mind what I will do different next year. Garden resolutions! I think at the top of the list is no more experimenting with plants that don’t work out. After 35 years of gardening here we know what works and what doesn’t. This year I tried a baby bell squash which was a nothingburger. They were a nice size but not enough flesh inside to make it worthwhile. Plus the one plant got huge and took up a lot of room. Leaves here in west Michigan just starting to turn - barely. Hummingbirds gone for 5 days now. Took down the feeder and put up the suet cage. The first red breasted nuthatch showed up. We have the regular white breasted ones all year long. Thanks again to Diana for keeping things going.
Interesting, I went to youtube and typed in mason jar hydroponics and found a few. I’m really just curious as we just don’t get enough sun here. I do alfalfa sprouts in the winter.
Oh, sure. People save them for many years on end. Here are the basics. Easy Peasy!

I’ve always found onion bags hung in my 55-degree stone basement worked really well to store them for the winter. Don’t let them freeze, though!
Great photo, Diana!
We picked our last tomato this week.
Paprika and Reza peppers are still setting blossoms.
I’m overwhelmed with paprika powder—maybe five years worth.
No sun necessary......All with a light....I have a flourescent lamp that I used to grow my seeds last year.
Thanks!
Beautiful picture. I first saw Burr Oak in Oklahoma last year. Friends with a ranch have some enormous ones. The acorns are gigantic, outer shell is almost like wood.
Really have no idea. I’m sure there are plenty of videos.
maybe sell some paprika on ebay?
If it would EVER stop raining (rain again, today!) that would really help!
I sacrificed one Butternut Squash yesterday to see how far along the were, but they’re not quite ripe, yet. Beau says I have a TON of pie pumpkins in the lower garden - happy about that!
Picked another basket of green peppers yesterday - bonus!
Beau got some fresh wood down on the porch/kitchen roof, but he’s leaving to CO for Elk Season next week, so that’s about a far as that’s going to go. My painter is coming to do some more painting between rain showers this weekend, but again, it’s not going to be done - she’ll be a ‘Half-Painted Lady’ until next spring. :(
Lettuces are going strong in the greenhouse, and I planted Arugula and Spinach in there, too. I dug some potatoes yesterday and miracle of miracles they weren’t rotted, even with 4” of additional rain last week.
I am fighting off a cold (Thanks, Beau! NOT!) which cannot happen because I have three different appointments for Dad at the doctor next week.
Other than that, it’ll soon me time to process squash and pumpkins. Glad I cleaned out the freezers, for sure!
I’m giving it away.
Wife’s cousins want some.
Neighbors.
Business associates...
I do broccoli sprouts. They taste so much better and theyre better for you. Great in salads and on sandwiches and in smoothies.
We'll see how they adapt to the Missouri Ozarks...
Nice, I’m sure they will love it. We order smoked sweet paprika from the internet, a place we have used many times. It is delicious. I think we probably have 5 years worth!
