Box Office: 'Joker' Dances to Record $13.3M in Previews

Previews of Warner Bros.' Joker lit up the U.S. box office on Thursday night, earning an impressive $13.3 million.

The R-rated supervillain pic, directed by Todd Phillips and starring Joaquin Phoenix, easily sets a new preview record for the month of October, besting last year's Venom ($10 million). It began screening at 4 p.m. local time.

Joker has sparked sparked headlines for its dark themes and violence, prompting theaters across the country to ramp up security and warn parents that the film isn't an ordinary superhero pic (the usual DC title card doesn't even appear in the credits).

To date, there have been no credible or specific threats made to cinemas, according to the FBI and law enforcement agencies in Los Angeles and New York. And interest in the film has only continued to increase, especially among males, who made up nearly 70 percent of Thursday's audience.

For the full weekend, Joker is expected to top the list of biggest October openings with $80 million-plus. The current champ is Venom ($80.3 million), not adjusted for inflation. Warners is being more conservative in its forecast, suggesting $75 million to $80 million for the weekend.

It’s almost as if they are trying very hard to encourage a nut to shoot up a showing.

Well, why on earth would they want to do that? [/s]

I’ve never before heard notices about record amounts during previews. That makes me think that this is just hype. Do not be fooled!

Who is being fooled?

Everyone with two brain cells understood this movie was going to be a massive hit.

Gotham was an early evening show and it might be the sickest show to ever play that early. They used to hold the more adult content for later in the evening, but a) they don’t care now and b) kids don’t go to sleep at 9 or 10 any more. Anyway, there was an episode where the Penguin served a woman’s children to her for dinner. There was other graphic violence. But what made me quit watching was when Penguin confessed his love for the Riddler. 🤮

You couldn't be more wrong. The villains in the DC Comics are just as legendary as the superheroes.

I thought Gotham was a great show, and that guy who played the Penguin did an excellent job.

Saw it Thursday night. It was a slow, tense train ride into mental illness and madness. Like Falling Down (‘93) meets Taxi Driver meets V for Vendetta. It’s a weird movie. There’s no protagonist. The music and the dark visuals push you down and stress you out and in a odd way you almost get a little relief when he finally snaps in the last few scenes because you can finally and oddly relax. Phoenix will win an Oscar for this. Might even get a nod for best picture. Interested to hear others thoughts and not the pearl clutching never going to see it crowd.

I really have no interest in seeing this. Given the reviews I have read this is no comic book movie but one that is beyond disturbing.

I didn’t much care for Heath Ledger’s Joker either, again very disturbing.

Frankly I liked Jack Nicholson’s performance much better as I think think it was more inline with the Comic Books and fun to watch.

Movie sounds depressing. I want to be entertained and come out of the movie house in a good mood, not depressed or upset. Why would I pay good money to be miserable after wards?
