Beset by injuries and tragedy, Ausmus' team struggled for nearly every month of the summer, except for a burst of inspired play through its grief over the midseason death of pitcher Tyler Skaggs in a hotel room in Texas. Only five major league regulars made it through the entire season without going on the injured list.
"I want to thank Brad for his hard work and dedication to this organization over the last two seasons as both a special assistant and a manager," Eppler said in a statement. "He navigated this franchise through one of its most difficult seasons with class and professionalism."
Ausmus was hired to provide a fresh voice to the Angels after nearly two decades under Scioscia while incorporating new-school strategies in analytics and player management. He did all of those things while maintaining an apparently strong relationship with Trout and his other players, but the results never showed up.
The Angels went 12-6 immediately after Skaggs' death on July 1, improving to 54-49 while rallying together in the wake of their well-liked starting pitcher's sudden death. But Los Angeles' AL wild card hopes abruptly fell apart in late July with a 2-5 homestand against AL cellar-dwellers Baltimore and Detroit, starting with a 16-inning loss to the Orioles that depleted their pitching staff.
The Angels went 7-18 in September and finished 37 games behind the AL West champion Houston Astros.

We wait all year for DC-MIL tonite.
But who has 3 hours to watch?
I’ve surmised this is not a big baseball site.
yup. managers today are yes men. the line ups, pitchers, relief pitchers to use that night against which hitters, everything comes down from the ivy leaguers who never played anything other than tennis and racket ball. I did not think boone would win. He did only because upstairs made all the decisions for him. watch him sometime. he is on a phone probably upstairs a LOT during a game.
Tim Anderson, A.L. BATTING CHAMPION and you don’t offer a word of praise?
Crew went to the pen early.
David Ross.
A. I’ve never known if there was a rule against pho as in the dugout. Other than the bullpen phone. Guess not. Grady Little was almost to manage a pitching staff without supervision.
B. What if their cell phones can’t get reception? Is that a problem with 40,000 fans? And road games ... cell phone only.
They probably have time before games to test phones, etc. But, I know I saw Boone one night on an MLB channel game with a cell phone talking on it. He was bent over with it tucked into his chest talking on it. Doing it that way I figured they could not have cell phones in the dugouts. I never thought much of Little. He was okay as a bench coach, but not as a manager. 40,000 folks in the stands don’t appear to have much trouble getting reception. I have watched games on TV where they have the camera out in CF on the batter, catcher and ump. Some people behind the backstop yakking on a cell phone danged near the whole game and made me wonder why in the heck did he/she pay the price of those tickets to sit there and yak on the phone for 9 innings.
