CVS pulls popular Zantac heartburn drugs from shelves after they are found to contain traces of..

CVS is removing the popular Zantac heartburn treatment and its own generic ranitidine products from its pharmacies after traces of a carcinogen were found in the drugs.

It acted after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) discovered that some of the pills contained small amounts N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA).

NDMA has been linked to colorectal, stomach, liver and kidney cancers in animal studies.

CVS claims the move was made out of an abundance of caution while the FDA continues to review the risks.

'Zantac brand products and CVS brand ranitidine products have not been recalled, and the FDA is not recommending that patients stop taking ranitidine at this time,' CVS said in a statement.

The CEO of AG's Sandoz unit - which makes Zantac - said last week it was halting distribution of the drug in all its markets, including the United States and Canada, following safety review of the drug by US and European drug regulators.

Zantac is among the most popular medications for heartburn, or acid reflux.

The discovery of NDMA in its active ingredient follows the earlier worrisome discovery of the same carcinogen in blood pressure management drugs like valosartan, irbesartan and similar drugs.

This is what happens when we allow 80% of our medial drug ingredients to be made in China and India.

Remember when tens of thousands of American dogs were poisoned and died from eating Chinese kibble bought by American dog food manufacturers? From the top expensive brands to Food Lion crap - dogs died. Pedigree was one of the few brands that NEVER bought Chinese kibble... But 'our' powerful Pharm Companies? They go the cheapest way possible...

More info on the recall:

“The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is alerting health care professionals and patients to a voluntary recall of over-the-counter (OTC) ranitidine tablets (75 mg and 150 mg), labeled by Walgreens, Walmart, and Rite-Aid and manufactured by Apotex Corp.”

Voluntary recall.

If the FDA found it to be harmful, does that mean that shoving tons of it into a mouse every day was not healthy?

Walmart has some sort of generic version of something like that called Omeprazole. Unsure if Zantac has the same ingredients.

No, I think that is generic for Prilosec, and I can’t take it because it can hurt my Kidneys, long history. Zantac is suppose to be safe for kidneys, so I suspect the normal non-generic would be ok????
I need it so I hope so.

For heartburn/acid reflux, a simple teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) in a glass of water does the trick for me.

I figure it just neutralizes the acid with a base.

When do you expect we will begin seeing the “If you or a loved one have suffered...you may be eligible for substantial compensation” commercials?

I’m thinking about 3 1/2 weeks...

My doctor at least a year and a half ago told me to stop taking Prilosec (Omeprazole) due to its link to causing dementia. I get asked about it and reminded not to take it every visit. I was told to take ranitidine instead. I guess the doctor will tell me to take pepcid when I check in with my appointment next week.

There’s a generic version and Walgreens has its version. May or may not be made by the same manufacturers but I hope someone checks.

Remember when tens of thousands of American dogs were poisoned and died from eating Chinese kibble bought by American dog food manufacturers?

Yes, I remember and the contamination was Melamine.

Melamine is a chemical compound that has a number of industrial uses, including the production of laminates, glues, dinnerware, adhesives, molding compounds, coatings and flame retardants. Melamine is a name used both for the chemical and for the plastic made from it.

When my Father-in-law remodeled his bathroom, many years ago, he used melamine paneling on the walls.

How did the Chinese get melamine into our dog food?

Zantac is ranitidine.
_____________
I went to the CVS pharmacy to return ranitidine, and the pharmacist said ranitidine doesn’t have that carcinogen.
