They had broken up in 2012, when third and long-time guitarist Martin Barre departed. (Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath was briefly the band’s second guitarist, after Mick Abrahams left.) When Anderson resurrected the name in 2017, it was as “Jethro Tull by Ian Anderson” at first.

That band’s lineup was rotating for many years.

I would submit to you that this man is The Godfather of Metal:

The Stan Kenton Orchestra is a close second.

Country male artists who are great songwriters also tend to have problems with depression, addiction and failed marriages.

Those lyrics about failed marriages, prison and failed lives aren't just pulled out of thin air.

It's perfectly ok. I, too, typically found myself voting for Blue Cheer or someone like that in such a debate.

But I bought the score to the overture to The Flying Dutchman (composed in 1841) and was astounded by what he had the strings playing and he did with the brass. Check out this video and go to 8:50 and listen to the strings after the break. The man easily set the stage for metal over a century later.

Imagine what he coulda done with Marshall stacks at Bayreuth.

Oh yeah, him. What a way to differentiate himself from the former Steely Dan singer of the same name.

Nah; old Ludwig Van got him beat by about a half-century with the first movement of his fifth symphony. 😉 Wilhelm Richard certainly was a big influence on the progressive rock movement though, I’d say.

I am swayable on Beethoven...I could partially agree with you if we selected Beethoven's 9th. I consider that to be the greatest composition ever - the fourth movement is essentially dictation from the Holy Spirit, and is made even greater considering Ludwig was stone deaf at the time. I also believe Beethoven's repeated use in the 5th of the opening theme..

...may have been a precursor to Wagner's leitmotif technique which came alive in The Ring.

However, Wagner's lush use of brass and fast string runs and fff seals Wagner as Metal's Godfather for me. But I could agree that Beethoven's is to Wagner and metal what the Declaration is to the Constitution and America. Thank you.

Waylon Jennings

Not exactly an example of a sober life.

I wonder did Frank get tired of singing New York

Interestingly enough, in his youth, my dad waited tables at an upscale restaurant in an out of the way location. He said one night a guest at a table suddenly started singing. It turned out to be Frank Sinatra. Apparently the man was such a narcissist that he couldn't deal with not receiving attention so he had to make a scene in a restaurant in order to draw attention to himself.

Btw...it’s Frank Beard, not bear.

Thank you for pointing out the typo.

And, those were merely rumors, that he was addicted.

From a 1984 People Magazine interview:

it’s hard to believe Beard’s ever been anything other than a hip-looking, conservative-thinking businessman with a penchant for Giorgio Armani. But by the time he was 16, he was an acid-popping, high school dropout and father. (He’s only recently been reunited with his two teenage daughters.) And just seven years ago he was an alcoholic with an equally nasty heroin habit.

Stay on point please

You claimed that going on tour and performing oldies the fans want to hear is horrible to performers

I and others here called you on that as bull

Now you’re dodging

You made a poorly thought out conjecture

Being this forum you were challenged

Just own it

Tks

LOL! My original point still stands.

Put a different way, imagine da Vinci having to repaint Mona Lisa over and over for the remainder of his career.

LOL! You claim some celebrities never grow bored doing the same thing over and hold up as evidence Waylon Jennings, a performer tormented by substance abuse. ROTFLMAO!

Now you say I speak nonsense. It would appear you realize at some level that you have painted yourself into a corner.

I have first hand knowledge from a performer and others
they don’t get tired of it

You have what

The usual freeper refrain of hunches and feelings and insults

Waylon snorted a dump truck of coke cause he liked it not because he hated performing

Nothing unusual there ...most folks who snorted blow in the 70s did so cause they liked the high....too much

Waylon performed until his diabetes wouldn’t let him anymore

He loved performing for his fans

As do most other performers sans the arty tortured ones

Your assumption he needed coke to perform his oldies for his fans is reflective of your overall reasoning on this topic....poor

Let’s examime the pinnacle of this subject

The Stones or The Who

Stones net worth per band member ranges from

Ron Wood 90,000,000 to Mick and Immortal at around 250-300,000,000 each

The Who last two members

Roger and Pete range from 90-105,000,000

Why stop there

Brian May touring right now 210,000,000

Slash and Iron Maiden both clock in at 100,000,000 plus net worth

All these folks touring this year

Does it look like the need money

No they like touring and playing for fans

It’s not torture ...

Even though yes it can be when you’re broke on a poorly planned tour

Older rockers like it

Your assertion perhaps reflects more of yourself than fact
