The excavation of a Stone Age community center in Ukraine is helping explain why large groups of tens of thousands of people flourished and then fell more than 5,000 years ago.
The "megastructure" excavated in Ukraine was large compared with the houses around it, though not particularly huge by modern standards. At 2,045 square feet (190 square meters), the structure was the size of a modest American home. However, some Eastern European megastructures were up to 18,000 square feet (1,680 square m) in size. Archaeologists have puzzled over these buildings, many of which have been discovered through methods that use magnetic anomalies in the soil to detect ancient structures. Now, the actual excavation of this one megastructure at a site called Maidanetske reveals that these buildings were used for everyday activities, like food preparation, storage and meals.
"It is similar to activities performed in normal houses," said Robert Hofmann, an archaeologist at Christian-Albrechts University in Kiel, Germany, who led the new research. "Somehow the intensity of these activities between normal houses and these megastructures is completely different."

Centralization has some benefits but it its drawbacks are much bigger if it goes very far at all.
It should never be allowed to go any farther than necessary.
That would help explain the socialist tendencies of their descendants.
Bad times make hard men.
Hard men make good times.
Good times make soft men.
Soft men make bad times.
Bad times make hard men.
It’s a cycle.
Tribe and clan has always been around and important. Hard to take down megafauna as one by yourself, hard to further the species without many wives and DNA diversity. It takes many with support in the resupply of lithics and meat or seasonal gathering and processing. But... Not that clan is not important, but there is a limit to how many a certain local environment can practically sustain. We have of course reached that limit my friend... :)
Prophetic man...
It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it. - Upton Sinclair
I think we are back to the “tinfoil hat” conspiracy theory thing here with this. Wait??? It is real???
Yes... And you did not listen and completely dismissed it at the time. Now it has come full circle as true and too damned late to counteract it... It has now been embedded in society.
Interesting culture. They favored larger, densely populated settlements.
Funny. That and the mandatory slingshot and spear confiscation program did them in.
Thanks all.

I think the final straw may have been the mass importation of cheap labor from the tribes of cannibals from just over their border.
And thank you guys for the additional and priceless information. :)
I must defer to BenLurkin, as my contribution consisted of a ping message. :^).
I know, On this thread... But I have a good memory and cannot discredit past contributions to many threads from you both.
Well earned credit where credit is due for commitment to special interest. Thank you. :)

All true, but it isn’t just the capacity of the environment that is a problem.
It is the distance (so to speak) between the decision makers and the facts on the ground and the consequences of decisions.
As centralization proceeds the increased potential of the size of the group cease to rise as quickly as the inefficiency and corruption.

“As centralization proceeds the increased potential of the size of the group cease to rise as quickly as the inefficiency and corruption.”
Absolutely, Communication and true practical productive intent becomes diluted and inefficient, opportunists become prevalent. That is when the tribe has become too big and needs to be split into more tribes. And each tribe is only as practical as their own surroundings will allow.
We used to be this way here in this country with local communities, counties, and local governments. Now this is all ancient history that we have traded for one size fits all central power and rule. And it could have easily been prevented if someone just had the balls to stand up against it to nip it in the bud case by case as it came.
I know over the years I tried every chance I had, but the wimps abound all folded instead of helping stand against it. And it is still happening, fear of personal “discomfort” and “slight inconvenience” has won out over growing a pair of balls.
Now the opportunists complain about opportunism.
And too many sold their birthrights for a mess of greenbacks.
Too many wanted to take advantage of the potential for corruption and too many wanted to take advantage of the increased potential of the increased group size legitimately and both types ignored the inefficiencies and corruption that would harm their wealth in the long run as well as their liberty.
The love of money (and the power that comes with it) truly is the root of all evil.
I absolutely agree, And practice against this. But this particular forum is not going to be understanding about the concept of true humble and honest minimalism. The spiritualism and virtue behind this concept of true honesty and lack of hypocrisy is beyond most here.
Comfort over honesty and principle. Yet they ask why the world is so screwed up. Well... Look in the mirror and count your own faults and it is pretty easy to find the answer to this question.

I wonder if that might indicate a defensive need due to larger than usual bands of raiders?
