Church leaders urge government to ban pointed kitchen knives

Church leaders in the Diocese of Rochester have called for the government to enforce stricter rules on the sale of domestic knives.

They’ve written an open letter asking for a ban on the sale of pointed kitchen knives. The letter was also signed by leading crime experts, as well as MPs, and community leaders.

It comes after a conference called The Point in Chatham last week raised awareness of the issue, as statistics show that there has been an 80 per cent rise in knife crime in the UK since 2014.

The signatories have urged Government to "take urgent measures to promote the sale of safe kitchen knife designs and restrict those designs which have been used in so many acts of violence."

The letter endorses research, highlighted at the conference, which explains that points on domestic knives are historic and no-longer necessary.

"Historically we needed a point on the end of our knife to pick up food because forks weren’t invented. Now we only need the point to open packets when we can’t be bothered to find the scissors," the letter reads.

It continues: "A five-year study in Edinburgh found that of the sharp instruments used in homicides, 94 per cent were kitchen knives. Research demonstrates kitchen knives are used in a large percentage of homicides due to their availability and lethal nature.

"Criminologists have demonstrated that reducing availability in turn reduces crime.

“The UK has worked for the public good by restricting handguns, paracetamol, smoking in public and plastic bags – now it is time to say ‘no bloody point’.”

The letter and conference are part of a month of awareness-raising activities about the dangers of knife crime in September, supported by the Diocese of Rochester, the Church of England in Medway, and the London Boroughs of Bromley and Bexley.

A special service reflecting on knife crime was also held in Rochester Cathedral on 21 September.

Rt Rev Simon Burton-Jones, Bishop of Tonbridge said: “Knife crime rips up the lives of families and friends, piercing the networks that give us life, meaning and support.

"Knife crime can be reduced if we follow the evidence trail, devote our resources to the right places, share knowledge smartly and value the organising power of local communities.

"The Church has a role to play, for it is located in most, if not all, places."

Insanity like this is why I have always loathed organized religion and don’t participate.

I thought that this had to be satire, but it looks like it is not. They had better go ahead and ban rocks, claw hammers, axes, and all types of digging impliments as well. And how about broken bottles, bats, golf clubs, twine, and pillows, they can all be used for murder as well.

Well that's it then. The UK needs knife control. Confiscate all knives.

What happens when you want to cut your steak or chop? We'll have to have a new National Service, the Royal Meat Cutters. Just call you local RMC post and the constable will report to your home, "Cutter First Class Ripper reporting to cut your meat, sir!"

Brits are tough! After the government confiscated their guns back in the 1930s, and after their army was beaten at Dunkirk, the tough English people prepared to throw back a German invasion with those great traditional weapons of the English farmer.

The EVIL HAY RAKE, Garden hoe, pitchfork and scythe!

Then they begged from the US citizens... SEND A GUN TO DEFEND AN BRITISH HOME!

Now they will be pleading with US citizens...”please send dentures so we can chew our food!”

I read that weapons were denied Okinawa’s by Japanese masters.

They simply devised ways to use ordinary objects and farming tools.

Never actually prepared food in a kitchen, I guess.

Speaking of knives, I was in a Walmart a few weeks ago and noticed they were clearing out Spyderco, Gerber, and Ruger knives. Prices were near giveaway. One model was reduced from $54.96 to $9.00. The Ruger from $29.96 to $6.00.

I bought all they had which I think was 9. I wondered if they were dropping them because they were all fighting style knives.

It turned out they were all, every single one, made in China. I will give the Chinese a break on these, they are uniformly beautifully made. The two Spyderco’s are every bit as nice as a U.S. made one I had around 20 years ago.

I had been raised to believe that my ancestry, father’s side, was German-ish. But then, back in the 90’s, I received a large envelope with a large colorful stamp on it. Believing I had won the Publisher’s Clearinghouse Sweepstakes, I rushed to the mail box and learned that a previously unknown and unheard of “relative” from England had sent it. It contained a huge family tree package that went back to 1066 when William the Conqueror sanctioned the Doomsday [Domesday] Book (census). The relative was seeking information on my particular branch of the family line (very scant information was out there about us). I confirmed that the branch of the tree was as accurate as my living family at the time could corroborate, so I sent a whole lot of info back to him to help complete the tree for our branch.

So it turns out that at one time, one of my distant ancestors was 23rd in line for the throne via a marriage way back when. We had ancestors that participated in the Battle of Hastings (Pennant Awarded), the Crusades, the 100 years War, we had many coats of arms in the Herald Registry... on and on. Most people spend their lifetime searching, but I was so very fortunate to have it all fall into my lap. I was so very proud of my lineage and still am today.

But, alas, presently I cannot even begin to describe my utter disappointment with Great Britain (especially England) and the level of shame and degradation I feel for them now when asked about my English ancestry. My American ancestry is a source of utmost pride for me. Arriving in the new world at Jamestown, my family produced at least 5 distinct branches spanning the country, countless thousands of us have served our country and continue to this day to serve with tremendous pride!

I don’t know what the hell happened to the mother country, but I am so ashamed of her... I am absolutely disgusted to maximum!

There would be a lot less knife attacks if Brits were allowed to conceal carry firearms.

And the most often used method of all is to just beat or strangle someone weaker or outnumbered.
