Private sale is better. Shops need to make a profit and will offer significantly less than the items blue book value- often around 60-70 of the value.

I checked into a couple and all are willing to wheel and deal but without the ammo as they can’t resell it. One guy will take it in a trade but with the ammo thrown in. By my estimation, the gun and ammo are worth collectively around $700 - 800 but the value they offered was for a new revolver worth around $300-350.

I’m old enough to remember going to a hardware store and buying my first shotgun.

The few times I’ve tried to make a trade with a gunstore they only offered wholesale price on my trade while wanting full retail on their item. If you go this route you will likely be ripped off.
