Baltimore Restaurant Accused of Racism as Dress Code Gets National Attention
The western Journal ^ | SEPT. 21, 2019 | C. Douglas Golden

Posted on 09/23/2019 9:07:24 AM PDT by Morgana

It seems like one of these stories comes across our collective news feeds every few months.

A restaurant or a nightclub posts a dress code somewhere on the premises. Someone spots the dress code and takes a picture of it, then posts it to Twitter or Facebook and talks about how racist it is.

An extreme outpouring of conspicuous wokeness ensues. The establishment either apologizes or says “sorry not sorry.”

The answer doesn’t really matter since the wokeness will just be ratcheted up. If the answer is sorry, sorry isn’t good enough. If they don’t say sorry, well, they should have!

And this goes on until the whole thing ends up in the news.

This latest case is special because the restaurant in question has barely even opened yet and it’s pretty much getting canceled online.

The Choptank, a Baltimore eatery, opened to the public just this week, according to its Twitter feed.

However, a sign noting that its dress code proscribes “excessively baggy clothing, athletic attire, jerseys, brimless headgear and backwards or sideways hats” has already gone viral, and not in a good way.

It was first posted on Twitter by J.M. Giordano, who said that it was “CODED.” (You can tell he really meant it because it was all in caps.)

No beanies allowed? You mean I can't wear my Freshman Beanie in the place? No Freshman Beanie no business from me! I'd rather eat in the Student Union!

I can’t imagine why they’d want to keep out markers of inner-city Baltimore culture!

In the long run this kind of silliness works for us. The ‘woke’ ones will never vote for us anyhow and sane people move away from folks obsessing about plastic straws, dress codes and uni-bathrooms.

It's like they're running an ad for our side. Of course they often destroy the business they're going after - and that's sad... But we can't stop them - just milk the revulsion most people feel.

All they need to do is flip it - collared shirts only and no headwear will solve the problem.

Just to be on the safe side, I normally wear an army helmet when visiting Baltimore. But since brimless headgear is prohibited, I guess I can’t eat at that restaurant.

Oh, wait. I guess I could wear one of those WW I doughboy helmets.

Face it, the term private property has been destroyed of its true meaning. You cannot make rules of conduct you impose on your customers. They have a new found “right” to use your business, no matter how they dress or how they behave. Every business is now a de facto “public” enterprise, and no longer yours.

The restaurant's web site notes that "The Choptank honors the market’s 200-plus-year legacy with authentic local seafood and an energy and hustle true to the area."

I give the owners credit for attempting to open a nice establishment there, but it's out of character with the surrounding "bustling" neighborhood. A reality that no eatery can afford to ignore.

The bottom line on this story is that the owners of the establishment are, I believe, sons of the owners of the Sinclair Broadcasting company. This group headquartered in the Baltimore metro area owns many TV stations nationwide and the principals are staunch conservatives. The restaurant in question is located just north of the Fells Point pier in a yuppified green zone hugging the harbor but bordered several blocks north by ghettos of public housing projects and the feral two-leggers bred inside. The restaurant is trying to keep its clientele upscale but I’m not real positive on its future. We live about 15 minutes north of there in the ‘burbs but I doubt we’ll patronize it.

"However, a sign noting that its dress code proscribes “excessively baggy clothing, athletic attire, jerseys, brimless headgear and backwards or sideways hats” has already gone viral, and not in a good way."

There's a middle-aged black man who comes into my mostly-white bar a couple of times a week, and he is the best-dressed person there, always dapper even when he's dressing casual. There's an Asian man who isn't far behind, usually dressed in a suit or some other spiffy clothes. The demand that you not look like a slob has nothing to do with race.

There's an older white man who comes in wearing a tank-top undershirt, revealing his hairy chest and neck, and it's repugnant. In the local supermarket, I see lots of white men dressed like absolute slobs, like overgrown schoolchildren from the other side of the tracks.

It also pretty much excludes gnomes from eating there. That’s racist!

Does not any establishment have the right to define a dress code? Seems to me they are trying to exclude gang bangers and 'hood thugs. Something necessary in Baltimore.

**************

That might help a little bit but its totally inadequate protection for the war zone you’re entering in Baltimore. Consider full body anti-riot gear complete with protective shield for good measure.

What a great idea! No sloppy clothing at the restaurant! No kids, no backpacks, no construction boots, or sunglasses after dark. In other words, they want grownups!!

Yes, that’s the worst. When we go out my husband wears a collared shirt and pants/shorts that fit properly. No weird T shirts, certainly no wife beaters!
I do the same for him, try to be presentable in public.
