An Ode to Being Old
On the harder-to-measure benefits of age and experience.
What age is someone most likely to achieve their peak performance?
It's a good question, and a logical place to start is with cognitive flexibility, or the ease with which one can switch between thinking about two different concepts or think about two different concepts simultaneously. Lots of people call this sharpness, and research shows it peaks between the ages of 21 and 30. This aligns with the tech-driven narrative that youth is a key determinant of success. In the words of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Young people are just smarter.
Not so fast.
Zuckerberg wasnt just being uncouth. He was downright wrong, at least according to the latest science.

Uhh, yeah, totally.
Wow some song. Never heard it before or even heard of John Prine. Thanks. I’m reading about him now on Wikipedia.
Young people on the work force are useless. Unless you want a bunch of underpaid lemmings to set up a CIA surveillance state. I bet they would do it.
Wisdom is Priceless — but agree — wish I had it in my twenties. Not celebrating youth or a seasoned life. But mourning how progressive culture is ruining young minds.
I AM MOST ASSUREDLY SMARTER., and I am................

I would rather be wise than smart. There are a lot of educated derilects out there.
Being old in Vietnam and in probably any other traditional society is much more pleasant than in the USA. The extended family is still basic and old parents are treated as pools of knowledge and wisdom and are not pushed out of sight but are the MCs of any family function and the arbiters of disputes. When walking becomes a chore and stumbling a problem one has a grandchild or niece/nephew at one’s side. One may not even open a door if there a younger person present.
What is smarter? I'm 72. I know more things now, but I'm definitely not as good a chess player as I used to be.

Older folks are needed to impart this knowledge because young people think they know it all when all they are is smart. They need to have lots more trips around the block before they start figuring it out.
Great tune. Saw him way back in the day.

Like, you said degrees dont equate to intelligence.
My uncle has a fantastic brain for math but has addiction problems that have severely messed up his life.
Some people are great in small narrow areas but cant function in other normal everyday tasks and situations.

sorry, babe. the only reason they think faster is because the hard drive has LOTS less data.
Average is a peak in our 50’s but degrade in 70’s if you sit on your butt and don’t learn new things.
hey, check out self-directed neuroplasticity.
obviously the brainiacs aren’t keeping up with brain science.
An old stallion and a young stallion were looking at a herd of mares. The young stallion said, “Let’s run down there and screw one of those mares’’. The old stallion turned to him and said ,”No son, let’s walk on down and we’ll screw them all’’.
