I had nearly the same thing in a St Paul Suburb growing up.
The “cheese sandwich” looked exactly like the nerve alien on a Star Trek “Operation Annihilate”
Which is why 50 years later it still stuck in my mind.

The German soldiers at Stalingrad had better rations.

With all due respect. I have been to the school cafeteria, and seen kids through away 70% of the food they were served. Maybe parents need to take control and send their own food in a bag for the kids to eat. It worked for me... We survived.

I attended a private academy and Most to EVERYONE packed their lunch. You want chips or soda/pop? Buy it. Hungry for burgers? Go to Mickey D’s.

A TV station in Panama City showed a local school lunch. It was technically nutritious but really small portions. Actually tiny portions. For instance a single slice of orange.

Back in the 50’s and early 60’s, I remember our lunchroom always had a pleasant aroma. The rolls were yeast rolls and great. As much as you could eat of good food.

The poor students worked at serving and cooking and got their meals for free.

What can I say. Beginning in Jr High I walked at lunch time either to my house or friend’s houses. I have no memory of our school cafeteria lunches in 1st-6th grades, though I know we had them, but I also remember taking a lunch box too.

The funny thing is most dieticians I have known are over weight, obese or generally unhealthy

No one is forced to buy lunch.

Never once did I buy lunch, always brought it.

I thought it was weird that anyone actually bought that stuff.

I would wait until I got home to eat. In a just world, that would be child abuse. They can’t feed that to prison inmates.

What would you expect from a government-run program? This is just another example of why American citizens should be keeping the government OUT of their lives, NOT trusting it to pay for their retirement, provide their healthcare, and raise their children. When Social Security goes broke, while you wait months for simple medical care, and your kid grows up an idiot - who you gonna blame?

I remember back in the late 60s, early 70s, many of my classmates bitching and moaning over the food served in Dade County public schools. Ungrateful wretches.

As for myself, I was just thrilled to have a hot meal every noon. It sure beat the alternative — a bologna sandwich from home. Mom, God bless her, didn’t have a lot of imagination when it came to sandwiches.

But meat, two veg, bread, fruit, and dessert — all for 35 cents, it was heaven. And it expanded my culinary horizons — being from a Polish family from Buffalo, I had never tasted corn bread before. I also remember my first taste of real Cuban picadillo — as good as any I’ve had since.

Now the lunch in this picture — well, I sure don’t see meat, two veg, bread, fruit, and dessert. I would call it “sparse,” and that would be kind.

Red Gold doesn’t make applesauce. Mostly just tomato products.

(I know the owner)

Zoom in, and that’s marinara sauce. For WHAT? I don’t know

I believe that is known as “pizza bread” in the Chicago school lunchrooms.

My hunch about a lot of school lunch programs: they buy the cheapest, lowest-grade crap possible, and someone pockets the surplus funds. When my son was in school in Chicago, the principal encouraged ALL parents to apply for the free meals program.

We were given soggy bread and tea for our meals.

And we were glad to get it!
