I remember back in the late 60s, early 70s, many of my classmates bitching and moaning over the food served in Dade County public schools. Ungrateful wretches.

As for myself, I was just thrilled to have a hot meal every noon. It sure beat the alternative — a bologna sandwich from home. Mom, God bless her, didn’t have a lot of imagination when it came to sandwiches.

But meat, two veg, bread, fruit, and dessert — all for 35 cents, it was heaven. And it expanded my culinary horizons — being from a Polish family from Buffalo, I had never tasted corn bread before. I also remember my first taste of real Cuban picadillo — as good as any I’ve had since.

Now the lunch in this picture — well, I sure don’t see meat, two veg, bread, fruit, and dessert. I would call it “sparse,” and that would be kind.

Yep. Same here. But those lunches were based on the old food pyramid. Nowadays, that food pyramid is completely upside down -— mostly grains and vegetables, then small amounts of fruit, a tiny bit of meat and fat. No sugar. I’m surprised they’re not serving kids crickets and grasshoppers! That pyramid wasn’t even put together by dieticians or nutritionists, or ANY kind of medical input. I forget where I read it, but some radical environmentalist type put it together, if I remember correctly.
