In light of the heavy backlash from fans and celebrities over rumors of a possible remake of ‘The Princess Bride, What other movies stands on its on as a classic (those near perfect movies) that should not be bastardized in being redone?
1. Godfather 2. Back to the Future 3. Die Hard 4. Shawshank Redemption 5. Original Star Wars, especially Empire Strikes Back 6. Rocky
What else?
That is not a remake. Using a film as inspiration is how many films get started, but no one has remade “Seven Samurai”.
Oh,c'mon! Yes,you could get any talented actress to play MayElla. And I suppose that there are kids who could play Scout and Jem. But how could you possibly recast Atticus,Tom Robinson or Sheriff Tate? For that matter,Cal...she was excellent too. But the questioning of Tom Robinson by Atticus,and his summation,are set in stone.
Exactly what I was thinking.

I comment to you only because Mockingbird is my very favorite film.
Agree that Pacino had lost the earlier magic but that earlier edge was brought out by better screenwriters and direction.
Although Coppola directed Part III, he was wracked with health problems and let others fill in for him. I don’t think he put the energy for perfecting the production as had the previous two. There was a much longer time span between Parts II and III. The brand had become worn.
The screenplay was credited to Mario Puzo who wrote the underlying novels but in reality there were several hands in the screenwriting. Hollywood allows only one or two to be credited.
Puzo was a novelist, not a screenwriter so he needed a screenwriter to bring out the story line. For Parts I and II, the real screenwriter was Robert Towne who is a legend in Hollywood history. He was the type of screenwriter that could take a B story line and take it past A+. He was really good. He got a callout for a tahnk you at the Academy Awards but could not be credited because only one could be credited and that had to be Puzo. Not knocking Puzo, he was an excellent novelist but he was only so-so as a screenwriter.
The screenwriter for Part III wasn’t in the same league as Robert Towne but to be fair wasn’t allowed to bring in some of the better parts of the story that were left out. Coppola was said to be very disappointed that Robert Duvall had turned down a continued role as Tom Hagen as Director of Corleone Charities.
I think Coppola couldn’t get it done and he should have abandoned it but was pressured to do it. He couldn’t gey the people he needed and likely he knew that if he didn’t do it then, it would never be done as the actors were aging.
The film grossed a lot at opening but faded quickly. The successful opening was because viewers expectations were based on Parts I and II.
I would tell someone who has never seen the trilogy to see Parts I and II only.

Or that THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE was made as DAYLIGHT (1996).
Lots of the old movies were remade using the same script. HIGH SIERRA, remade as COLORADO TERRITORY, OR SAHARA remade as LAST OF THE COMANCHES.
Another was THE MALTESE FALCON (1931) remade as the far superior MALTESE FALCON in 1941.
The really great ones do not need to be remade.

The original National Lampoon “Vacation”, especially the scene in East St. Louis.
It’s a remake. Even if you throw out the ones you’re wrongly insisting aren’t remakes there’s also the anime TV show Samurai 7. No matter how you slice it, Seven Samurai HAS been remade. You can argue how many, but you CANNOT argue it hasn’t happened.

King Kong
Psycho should never have been remade or had a sequel.
I still hope for Godfather IV and then Godmother.
Every Bind movie is formulaic and therefore a remake.

I’ve already posited Ian McShane for Atticus. Michael Clarke Duncan could have done Tom Robinson very well, sadly he’s gone. There are great actors out there.

One of my favorites. I saw it at the theater in 1966! When Claudia Cardinale opens her shirt for Burt Lancaster, it was a very dark scene but you could tell she was ALL WOMAN, even in the pre “ratings” days.
Saw it again a few months later, and in this scene a dark grey “fog” suddenly covers the lower right of the screen and you could see nothing. Every time it is on TV, the fog is still there. Bummer.
