In light of the heavy backlash from fans and celebrities over rumors of a possible remake of The Princess Bride, What other movies stands on its on as a classic (those near perfect movies) that should not be bastardized in being redone?
1. Godfather 2. Back to the Future 3. Die Hard 4. Shawshank Redemption 5. Original Star Wars, especially Empire Strikes Back 6. Rocky
What else?
The Quiet Man
Charlie Verrick
-Gone with the Wind
-Lawrence of Arabia
-Seven Samurai
-Ran
YES. I agree! Hard to get the Wayne - O’Hara chemistry with anyone else.
But you know what? I would have said “True Grit” a few years ago, but that turned out great, IMO.
Casablanca.
Patton
Tora, Tora, Tora
Battle of Britain
The Longest Day
You simply cannot replace or replicate the attitudes that people had back in that era - remember, virtually all of the stars of these movies were actually in WW2, and the military advisors definitely were. No how, no way that such movies should be remade.
The Lion in Winter
The Third Man
The Magnificent 7 (oops)
Ben Hur (Double oops)
Detour (Ann Savage’s role cannot be replicated)
The Creeping Terror
All About Eve
Sunset Boulevard
Maltese Falcon (Bogart version)
The Sting
Adam West’s Batman
It’s Trad, Dad
Green Dolphin Street
Ill bet you theyll eventually redo Gone with the Wind with all of the PC stuff put in. They wait till olivia de Havilland dies
The Room
Not sure if you're aware, but there is going to be a re-telling of Midway coming out in November. Certainly the CGI allows for a level of front-seat realism that wasn't available to the makers of Tora, Tora, Tora. We'll have to see how the history and acting compare, but the trailer looks promising:
Jaws
Its a Wonderful Life
Highlander
“True Grit a few years ago, but that turned out great, IMO.”
I agree. I enjoyed that more than the John Wayne version.
In general, though, I don’t like to see remakes. The Godfather should be untouchable, as should Tombstone (even though a case could be made the shootout at the OK Corral was shown in several movies).
Rio Bravo should not have been remade as El Dorado. The former was much better. Wouldn’t have thought I’d ever prefer a Dean Martin performance over Robert Mitchum, but I most definitely did. Plus Rio Bravo had a couple of great tunes, one by Martin, the other by Ricky Nelson. And Walter Brennan was never better than he was in that flick.
Mary Poppins, oops!
Shane
The Searchers
Willy Wonka, oops!
