Should dietary guidelines recommend low red meat intake?
Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition ^ | 9-5-2019 | Frédéric Leroy & Nathan Cofnas

Abstract

Mainstream dietary recommendations now commonly advise people to minimize the intake of red meat for health and environmental reasons. Most recently, a major report issued by the EAT-Lancet Commission recommended a planetary reference diet mostly based on plants and with no or very low (14 g/d) consumption of red meat. We argue that claims about the health dangers of red meat are not only improbable in the light of our evolutionary history, they are far from being supported by robust scientific evidence.

What many of these activists don’t take into account are people who are advised not to consume the typical protein-laden plants such as beans and soy, plus nuts and seeds. Dialysis patients have to avoid them because they’re loaded with phosphorus that their kidneys cannot filter out, and that dialysis does inadequately.

I was advised to consume a lot of lean meat for protein, because I don’t stomach fish well.

Plants contain many nutrients that are not as available - if available at all - from animal flesh.

Vitamin C. Scurvy.

There are also many non-nutrient (i.e., having no specifically associated deficiency state) compounds that are nevertheless beneficial - such as soluble and insoluble fiber.

Many of the compounds that promote longevity are strictly phyto-chemicals.

We are - by and large - omnivores, neither strictly carnivorous nor vegetarian.

“Because much of the world’s population is inadequately nourished and many environmental systems and processes are pushed beyond safe boundaries by food production, a global transformation of the food system is urgently needed.”

Someone I know yelled at me today about eating red meat. This article must have just popped up on this person’s smartphone newsfeed and this is the standard kneejerk reaction to it.

Dietary guidelines should read:

What you eat actually becomes your body, determines your mood, immune and other health. Your choices can make a huge difference in your life for the long and short term future. Educate yourself on ingredients and nutrients. Minimize foods that make you feel bad or sick. Study experts from different schools of thought on nutrition and try what works well for you and your family.

You’re eating so well. The veggies, bit of fruit, and your whisky are fine too. Keep it up. Perfect.

I do not feel well nor satisfied after almost all plant protein. I can do a little beans like in a salad or chili here and there. The only non-animal protein that works for me is tofu. I make a big bowl of it with broccoli and Korean spices and snack on it, but mostly it’s animal protein that floats my boat. I know the fake meat would make me sick for hours.

I am a carnivore, I will never stop eating red meat or venison, or any other herbivore.

Normally, I would get a nice, big, juicy steak to celebrate this question, but I’m celebrating with venison instead.

I been on a Carnivore diet for over 13 month now - mainly beef water salt with optional coffee, diary, other meats.

Very happy with the results! Blood work normal and without any supplements.

Lots of people trying it now for the health benefits as well as the weight lost. Check out the web info on it.

Pork is supposedly the “other white meat”.

14 g/d = less than 1/2 ounce of red meat per day.

Uh, no. I don’t think so.

Since going with Intermittent Fasting, I don’t even do breakfast anymore, and I really don’t miss it.

I like to do my workout right at the end of my fasting period, I have so much energy by then, even though I hadn’t eaten in 18 hours.

What I have learned though is to make sure my meat portion is no bigger than my hand, otherwise I do tend to experience bloating, but that size of a portion generally makes me feel the best.

How do you cheat with veggies?

As long as they are green-leafy vegetables, they’re perfect.

You need to get your Potassium (3,500–4,700 mg daily), this is crucial!

Interesting! Thanks for posting it (and making it readable.)

I thought it was settled science that humans are omnivores, judging from the shapes of our teeth. Did not know about the gut.

So it’s beef and pork for us. Either home raised or locally raised.

And let’s remember pork is freedom food ... think of the oppressive societies that don’t are terrified of bacon.

"Plants contain many nutrients that are not as available - if available at all - from animal flesh."

That's what people think. But really, not so much. There are people that eat only meat. A couple said so right on this thread. And there have been long term experiments with people eating only meat. They did not get scurvy or any other deficiency.

Apparently the need is less, but also it is recommended that if you are strictly carnivore you should eat organ meats. Liver is very nutrient dense. If you don't do that then sure, you might need some good vegetables. But vegetables aren't a requirement in themselves.

I’ve looked into The Carnivore Diet, and for me, it’s just too hard to do it the right way. You really need to pay attention to the meats you’re eating, and eat a lot of organ meats, like Liver, which is not my thing.
