Users find PCs silenced while Microsoft looks into search fix
Microsoft seems unable to catch a break with its Windows 10 updates. No sooner than it acknowledged that its CPU usage fix borked desktop search for some, users complained that the patch has also caused audio issues.
Released on 10 September for Windows 10 1903 (aka the May 2019 Update), KB4515384 is a security update that included a fix for Cortana's CPU-munching habit. Alas, it turned out that the fix left desktop search a tad broken for some users.
While the support page for the update resolutely states (at time of writing) that "Microsoft is not currently aware of any issues with this update", the company's handy health page for Windows 10 did receive a quiet update on 11 September to indicate that it had acknowledged the issue and was looking into the problem.

It appears that we can add audio to the borkage. A glance at Reddit shows a groundswell of grumbling as some long-suffering Windows 10 users have found their audio inoperative following the update.
While a few have had some success with a reinstall of drivers or other workarounds, a worrying number have resorted to simply uninstalling the patch in order to restore sound.
The problem is that unlike the KB4512941 snafu which was an optional update KB4515384 contains important security fixes, including protection against a subclass of speculative side-channel vulnerabilities.
Microsoft is to be applauded for getting these security updates out. However, if the quality of the patches is getting to be so whiffy that users start blocking them for fear of what might end up broken, then all that effort will be for naught. ®
Gave up on Windoze after Microsoft gave up on hiring Americans. Its Indian shitware now, and Microsoft is an Indian shitshow.
Yeah after the XBOX team I was working on in Redmond was replaced by H1B Indians after our American manager was replaced by an Indian one this ended it for me. No Windows, no XBOX, no Skype, no Microsoft Office, nothing.
I had trouble recovering from the major version update that came out less than a week ago. Then I saw that they were pushing this update on me. I went in and scheduled it out as far as I could, but next week it is going to be forced on me. My hope is that they have corrected it by then.
Microsoft should be sued for breaking people’s computers.
I'm so disgusted with my one month old Windows 10 laptop, I'm seriously considering making the leap to Linux.
I've truly had enough of Microsoft.
Since you clicked on the pop-up, freep-mail me so I can send you instructions to allow me to remote access your pc t8 check for any viruses.
That was one DISGUSTING book.
“some kind of avant garde thing for nerds and tinkerers”
Exactly! Fifteen years ago, it was Linux that required tinkering.
Now, Linux “just works” and Windows often doesn’t.
Didn’t want to bother on a Saturday, been waiting to hear back? Did it go?
Windows Ping List, please!
Post a Linux thread and the MS crowd leaves it alone... Go figure.
Post a Linux thread and the MS crowd leaves it alone... Go figure.
I figure with many 100,000s of visitors to FR threads, and 85% of them using Windows, the chances are pretty good that a number of them are experiencing the troubles in the trouble threads I and others post. Its worth it, even though the threads do attract a lot of negative comments.
As a rule, Ive found that for every FReeper who leaves a comment on a thread like this, there are 10-25 who read it and didnt comment, either because they could but didnt feel inspired to, or theyre lurking and arent able to post a comment.

Well, mostly thats because the percentage of Linux users is small, and Linux is considered pretty esoteric by Windows users, so they dont bother joining in.
Im sometimes bothered by the Windows bashing and Microsoft bashing, but in some cases (like the never-ending Windows 10 Update dumpster fire) there are lots and lots of folks who are suffering because of it, and having a place to vent and possibly find a solution is helpful.
Okay, youre on. Welcome!
Harlan Ellison would approve...
97 people did not “like” that??
Heathens!
Long story, but still no joy, and I had a 30 year IT veteran here trying to sort it out.
According to him, I've either got a military grade virus on this computer, or there's a manufacturer defect hidden deep in the system.
I've had the computer for under 30 days, so we're going to exchange it for a working model.
In the meantime, I've still got my previous laptop, which I want to downgrade to Windows 7 (or switch to Linux). I've got a legal copy of Windows 7, and all of the necessary drivers on a USB stick. I just don't know the procedure to do a clean install.
I could use your help with that, if you don't mind.
Absolutely!
Don't worry, they'll tell you...
